Low Tide is an Art and Archive Project by Scott Holmquist managed locally by Carolyn Jones, assembling a comprehensive survey of visual Bay histories for public re-presentation and preservation.
COLLECTING AND RADICAL ARCHIVING
Operating mainly from an office at Bug Press in Arcata, California, we are working to include the entirety of every document published to date, within evolving limits. We began in 2011 and expect to continue at least through 2015.
We've copied material from nearly thirty locations around the Bay and enjoy diverse supporter. (See Support on website.)
Much has already been lost, and more will be without this effort—for instance, a trunk of bound and annotated photos and other documentation of the original dolosse reinforcement of Bay jetties turned over to us in June 2012.
Once complete the archive is intended for public use.
REPRINTING AND EXHIBITION
The first exhibition opened in Eureka, CA, December 13th, 2012. (See Exhibits on website.)
First drafts of a visual index made from the archive were exhibited in 2013. These are to incite new forms of analog indexing designed to complement and secure digital archiving.
To our knowledge, no such treatment of any Bay currently exists. And in the case of Humboldt Bay, there is not even the simplest picture book available for serious reference or as a souvenir for visitors.
ALCHEMICAL AMBITIONS
"Why art from an archive? To convey the ecstasies of this kind of research! And whenever possible to unleash works from the collection's critical mass of images whose beauty, love—and hate—may forever disrupt efforts of the Bay's colonizing demons, whose powers depend entirely upon precisely the graphs, maps, and photos we're gathering." —Scott Holmquist
