Ludington State Park

Description

Ludington State Park is a state park located just north of Ludington, Michigan between the shores of Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake. The park encompasses nearly 5300acre and contains several ecosystems, including: forests, sand dunes, a dam, a Great Lake, and a river.Big Sable Point LighthouseLudington State Park is home to Big Sable Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse was first lit in 1876 and stands 112ft high. It can be visited from the beginning of May through the end of October. Visitors must walk 2miles on the sandy beach to reach it, though there is limited bus transportation on certain days throughout the season. Visitors can tour the lighthouse for a small donation.Hamlin LakeHamlin Lake is an artificial lake created by the backup of the Big Sable River by the Hamlin Lake Dam. The lake, which covers 4,990acres, is five miles long and two miles wide. It has two sections, the upper and lower lakes, which are separated by the narrows. The lake is great for swimming during summer months as it is typically much warmer than Lake Michigan and has a smaller swimming area, making it easier to keep track of family and friends. Park visitors can rent a variety of boats at this location and many of the park's trails (including a canoe trail) begin and end here. During the winter season, ice fishing is popular.Big Sable RiverBig Sable River is the primary river that runs through the park. The park's portion of the river begins at Hamlin Lake Dam, the dam that created Hamlin Lake, and ends at Lake Michigan. The primary road that runs through the park runs alongside the full length of this portion of the river. During the summer months, Big Sable River can often be seen with groups of people floating down current in inner tubes. The river is home to otters and many fish. In 2005, the park made an effort to replenish the salmon population by creating cages for the fish to grow in and then releasing them when they were able to live on their own.

What a beautiful place. It's hard to believe this is in Michigan. You have to go if you've never been before. The water is a little chilly but not bad. The views are incredible. The water is clear. It's just breathtaking. Its 17 dollars to get in if you don't have the park pass on your plate. Even so, worth every penny. We will definitely be going back.
Always a treat. One of the best state parks in Michigan. Fantastic beach coast, iconic Lake Michigan shoreline. Excellent day hikes Lighthouse loop is a joy Adjoins more natural beach coast north of the park , which is also beautiful. Even the drive out to the park is beautiful, with places to stop and get out to walk along the beach. Pet friendly, although restrictions have recently been put in place in the park. Can be crazy busy for campers. Restrooms: Several modern bathrooms, a few rustic ones too Dog-friendliness: Some restrictions in place but generally a great place to bring your woofer.
Beautiful white sandy beach that goes on and on. They have a nice dog area too. People can float on rafts, canoe, or kayak. They have sand volleyball courts. And a bath house where they sell ice cream! It is so much fun. Just one caution: the water is a bit brisk.
Stayed at the campground. It was very busy and campsites were side by side and not secluded. However right on the beach. Despite the high density and many children it was quiet and easy to sleep. Beach is right next to the campground. Showers and restrooms were well maintained and no problems using because most folks were in RVs Restrooms: Clean. No lines Dog-friendliness: Dogs allowed on trails and campground but not on beaches
Gorgeous state park with a lot of options! We rented kayaks, the employees were very kind and helpful and the equipment was all in great shape, also took a hike around some of the trails, very well kept and good variety for different lengths, terrain, etc. will definitely stop again sometime!
We visited at the end of October, off season. We felt like we had the whole park to ourselves. The hike to the lighthouse is super easy if you follow the service road the "Lighthouse Trail" that follows the shoreline.
One of my favorite places to cruise through after a long hard day of work. Free entertainment there if you like hiking, biking, people watching, sunsets and swimming! They also do snowshoe workshops in the winter and have great lighthouse to tour!
We love this beach. It’s absolutely beautiful. We visit each time we come to Ludington. It’s always clean and pristine. Our kids enjoy it as well. It’s perfect for photos all times of the day but those Lake Michigan sunsets hit different!
One of the most beautiful places in Michigan! Trail to the lighthouse and Michigan Lake, trail from the campground walk next to the river Dunes, sand, trees birds Everything to love the place
Lovely beach! I loved that there was a pathway all the way down to the waters edge, and that the beach was raked and cleared off alewives as best as possible.
