Founded in 1982 by Emöke B'Racz, Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe is the region's largest locally-owned independent bookstore. We bring books, coffee, authors, and readers together in an environment that nurtures community, diversity, and the joy of reading.

I didn't have any photos from inside the bookstore but it is absolutely adorable! They have the genres sectioned off perfectly, so you know exactly where to go! Employees were extremely helpful and sweet! They also had a blind date with a book section, the book was wrapped up so you couldn't see what it was, and a typed synopsis was on the front to tell you what it was about without giving it away! I could spend hours in here
Independent bookstores are my favorite, so I rarely pass one without going in. Was super excited to explore this one, but unfortunately there were so many people inside that you couldn't "stir them with a stick" as my mama says. They did have a great selection of books, and obviously they are doing something right with the crowd that they attracted. I hope to visit again when they are less busy, maybe on a weekday.
What a great asset to the community- a thriving independent bookstore! Be sure to check out the banned books and the "blind date with a book" displays, along with staff favorites! This store is a true jem.
Honestly, who comes to Asheville and doesn't stop by? It's right in the heart of Asheville. This bookstore is adorable. The coffee shop inside also serves delicious lattes. I love the large selection of books. It is a dangerous place to come for book lovers. You wont regret popping in.
I used to love this bookstore but they've closed the bathrooms for customers. How can you have a cafe but not let me use the bathroom anymore? Good selection of books but I was very disappointed they still have the bathroom closed in 2022. There's a public library down the street that has one though.
This bookstore is so charming and well curated. Loved the “blind date with a book” section and they also had a great selection of translated fiction. A must-visit in Asheville!
Ran in here on a whim and was so impressed. Very unique selection no matter what you’re looking for. Great place to discover new books by local authors and just interesting reads you wouldn’t find in a chain bookstore. Great energy as well, very atmospheric. Would recommend 10/10. Picked up 3 books after about 15 minutes of looking
Really enjoyed this shop! Nice displays, it was fun to wander the aisles and see what caught our attention. Loved the Blind Date with a Book display, and we picked one out to take home. Staff was friendly and we felt welcome.

Very friendly staff. eclectic selection of books. I especially appreciate the section designated for a blind book selection. Blind date with a book. I tend to get overwhelmed with picking a new book and anticipating some buyer's remorse. Blind date with a book was exactly what I needed to try something new based on a loose description without so much dread.
