We provide fine men's clothing for the Napa Valley lifestyle from elegant Italian sports coats, slacks and shirts to the latest styles in blue jeans and leather jackets.
Mario's has provided St. Helena and the Napa Valley with the finest men's clothing for more than 25 years.
Ron and Rene Sculatti first opened Mario's in 1981 at 1309 Main Street, in the newly remodeled Hotel St. Helena. They named their new store after their son Mario, who was only about a year old at the time.
"To me, the name Mario's symbolizes what the store is all about," Ron says. "We're a family-owned and family-run business, and we're dedicated to treating each one of our customers like a friend of the family. So when it came time to name the store, it was natural to name it after my son.
"Also, I was born and raised here in St. Helena. I went to school here, and I'm proud to be part of this community. Naming the store after my son represents my long-term commitment to serving St. Helena—to giving back for all I've received.
"My way to do that," Ron goes on, "is to offer distinctive men's clothes that are truly suited to the Napa Valley lifestyle. I know that lifestyle well, because I've lived here all my life. So whether it's an elegant Italian sports coat and slacks for a wedding, or a beautiful shirt for a party, or a comfortable pullover for relaxing on the deck—or just a nice pair of blue jeans for walking the vineyard—we've got what men in the Napa Valley need.
"And since we emphasize contemporary European styles—particularly Italian—the name Mario's communicates the kind of sophisticated yet down-to-earth clothes we've become known for.
Doug Champaign became co-owner of Mario's in 1990. Doug has brought to the store a broad knowledge of men's clothing and a commitment to keeping Mario's on the leading edge of contemporary fashion.
"Several times a year," Doug says, "we go to the major clothing shows in New York and Las Vegas, where the top European and American designers have their latest fashions on display. We spend days looking at everything, and we choose the clothes for Mario's that we know will best fit the Napa Valley lifestyle—casual, but elegant. We tend to favor European designs—Italian, French, and German—but we select the best of what American clothing companies have to offer as well.
Stores on Main Street in St. Helena come and go. But for over 25 years, Mario's has not only survived, but grown and expanded. In 1992, the store moved to its current location at 1223 Main Street. With nearly twice as much space as the original location, Mario's can offer a full range of men's clothing—from dressy to casual.
But providing a choice selection of quality men's clothes is only part of the equation.
"It's the level of service we provide to our customers that makes Mario's a success," Ron says. "As I said, we treat our customers like friends of the family—so they come back, year after year. We offer in-house tailoring, and we do whatever it takes to make sure that every customer's is completely satisfied."
"We're on a first-name basis with many of our customers," Doug adds, "both local people and people who come to the Napa Valley from all over the world. Often, when we buy clothes for the store, we buy with specific customers in mind. We know our clientele—because they come shop at Mario's regularly. They know they can count on us to carry clothes that are both distinctive and practical—clothes that are an expression of good taste and good sense."
Distinctive clothing and personal service that's the foundation of the business: after more than 25 years, Mario's continues to be the number one men's clothing store in the Napa Valley.
