Description

Visitors to Holly Springs will not want to miss the Marshall County Historical Museum, one of the most interesting and unusual destinations the city has to offer.

Like many sites concerned with Southern history, the museum devotes the first few exhibitions of its tour to artifacts from the Civil War era. As guests proceed to the upper floors, however, the true quirkiness of the place begins to come into focus. In one room, they find a collection of taxidermy animals indigenous to Mississippi; in the next, flapper girl clothing from the 1920s. Over here a large collection of Victorian children’s books shares floor space with an antique Victrola; while over there items made by the Native American tribes of Mississippi sit next to the first private bathtub ever owned in Holly Springs. From wall to wall, there is truly a little bit of everything: quilts, dresses, Elvis records, old advertisements, antique books and bottles, dollhouses, sports memorabilia, promotional materials from past presidential campaigns. The playful randomness of it all, coupled with the fact that everything on display was donated by local residents, has led many visitors to suggest that the place is more like an eccentric grandmother’s attic than a museum!

Adding another layer to the collection’s considerable charm is the museum building itself. Just one of several Holly Springs structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was originally built as a girls’ dormitory for the Mississippi Synodical College during the early 20th century. That is why, unlike many modern museums, which are designed to move people in and out as quickly as possible, the Marshall County Historical Museum retains both the layout and the atmosphere of a domestic environment and gives the distinct impression that everyone is welcome to come in and stay for a while. We certainly hope you will.

We loved visiting here! We were only here for an hour, and it wasn't enough time to see everything. The history was fascinating and enlightening! It is so awesome that members of the local area have donated so much history, including clothing, from times past. I sincerely cannot recommend this museum enough!!
We LOVED our visit to this place! First, it's a beautiful old building that has a wonderful history of its own. Secondly, it is chocked full of so many antiques! Furniture, local memorabilia, relics, vintage clothes, portraits, turn of the century quilts, vintage jewelry and items from every war in which the United States was engaged, especially the Civil War. Be prepared to spend a while here because there is so much to see and learn. The best five dollars I've spent so far in 2020.
Stopped by the Historical Society of Marshall County museum in Marshall County, Mississippi on our way back to Georgia from out west. To say this place is interesting is an understatement. We would need at least a full day to go through everything. There is so many fascinating exhibits here. The old girls school it is housed in is also beautiful.
My wife and I visited in July, from out of state. The museum is old school, and we found it very interesting and enjoyable. The highlight was our conversation with the very friendly people who work there. They gave us additional info and anecdotes about Holly Springs, and even stayed a bit past closing to ensure that we saw everything! I should point out that friendliness and pleasant conversation were par for the course in Mississippi.
Very friendly people running the place. It was a nice day for a ride.
Really a neat place to check out. The people who run it are great and very knowledgeable.
This is a very intriguing museum the great collection of local history and a wonderful storyteller as the chief curator!
Great little museum. $5.00 entry fee is definitely worth it. Great variety of exhibits.
A quaint place full of local history. Friendly staff. I enjoyed their collection of vintage clothing.
Thanks again and I hope to see how much it would cost to get a few things done before we leave for Florida tomorrow morning at the airport
