Description

Housed in a glorious Beaux Arts mansion on 5,300 acres high above the Columbia River, Maryhill Museum of Art opened to the public May 13, 1940 and today remains one of the Pacific Northwest’s most enchanting cultural destinations. The museum was founded by Northwest entrepreneur and visionary Sam Hill, who purchased the property and began building the house with dreams of establishing a Quaker farming community. When that goal proved untenable, Hill was encouraged by friends Loie Fuller, Queen Marie of Romania, and Alma de Bretteville Spreckles to establish a museum.

Maryhill Museum of Art boasts a world-class permanent collection, rotating exhibitions of the highest caliber, and dynamic educational programs that provide opportunities for further exploration by visitors of all ages. On view are more than 80 works by Auguste Rodin, European and American paintings, objects d'art from the palaces of the Queen of Romania, Orthodox icons, unique chess sets, and the renowned Théâtre de la Mode, featuring small-scale mannequins attired in designer fashions of post-World War II France. Baskets of the indigenous people of North America were a collecting interest of Hill; today the museum’s Native American collection represents nearly every tradition and style in North America, with works of art from prehistoric through contemporary.

Maryhill’s Outdoor Sculpture Garden features more than a dozen large-scale works by Northwest artists. The Maryhill Overlook is a site-specific sculpture by noted Portland architect Brad Cloepfil; nearby are Lewis and Clark interpretive panels. Four miles east of Maryhill is a life-sized replica of Stonehenge, Stonehenge Memorial, which Sam Hill built to memorialize local men who perished in World War I. Nearby, the Klickitat County War Memorial honors those who have died in the service of their country since World War I.

The museum was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. In 2001 the museum was listed as an official site of the National Historic Lewis and Clark Trail and in 2002 was accredited by the American Association of Museums.

It's been a while since my last visit to the museum. I love the grounds and the building architecture as much as the contents inside. There is so much to experience and see inside with beautiful art, cultural treasures, and history. Writing about everything would occupy a significant amount of time. Suffice it to say that the best way to do Maryhill is simply to visit and experience it for yourself. It is a treasure in so many ways.
Huge, beautiful, got to see floor chess pieces, chess sets from around the world, Rodin work, Native American artifacts, fashions from Paris. Impressed with the architecture of the home and doors and bathroom of the era. Free to get in.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
I mostly visited this time to see the chess set collection. This is one of the best in the US, with approximately 80 sets on display and in excess of 400 in the collection. There were sets that ranged from mid-19th century Ivory to 2020 3D printed sets. They were given their own gallery in 2019. The Museum is worth the $12 admission just for the chess sets. In addition to the chess sets, the museum has galleries devoted to items from pre-communist Romania donated directly to the museum by the royal family and a Native American gallery.
I walked out of this place utterly disgusted and disappointed. The main attraction that I came to see was the native artifacts. What I found was a whole lot of evil secret society symbolism and deception. I didn’t post pictures of the top level because it contained dark occult symbolism that does not need to be shared. This is blasphemy to the natives! George Orwell — 'Those who control the present, control the past and those who control the past control the future.'
Great clean well run museum. Some of the art can be dark for kids but headed downstairs to the chess. They have elevators for those handicapped.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
This museum is deceptively LARGE... there is so much more here than I expected from the outside. I was impressed with the number of artists and subjects covered as well as the amount of entertaining historical facts available, it was a wonderful, entertaining experience. We enjoyed ourselves wandering all 3 levels of the building and then sat on one of the benches overlooking the river and had a picnic. This is a highly recommended destination.
The setting for this museum is amazing high on a bluff overlooking the Columbia River with great Mt. Hood views. I particularly enjoyed the outdoor areas with the sculptures and interpretive area. I wish the cafe were open on our visit as it would have been great to hang out on the lower terrace with refreshments.
I loved my visit here to see the Rodin exhibit but my favourite was the Chess sets room. Beautifully simple and stunning. Gorgeous drive through the Columbia Gorge about 90 minute from Kennewick. You won't be sorry if you go.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
This was a wonderful museum. I would have loved to access the cafe, it was closed. I didn't see any maps on a wall or stand which would have helped the star you are here, and where you could go next we had a hand held map, but other maps to verify would be nice. You can take pictures but no flash photography. More places for fans or AC during the hot weather is needed.
The museum was varied and interesting. The views were wonderfulVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
