The Center for Sustainability integrates Maryville's core values of civic engagement, ethical leadership, teaching and global awareness in support of environmental stewardship, social equality, and economic health. The Center initiates encourages, and facilitates, collaborations that bring about sustainable changes at Maryville University and beyond. To accomplish this goal the center collaborates with students, faculty, and staff from administrative, operational and academic units on the Maryville campus. Students are empowered to lead their peers in community-based projects with other students, university personnel, and local community agencies at Maryville and throughout Missouri. Currently, the Center is working with Maryville community to use natural and energy resources responsibly by creating systems that enable individuals and groups to reduce, reuse, and recycle all resources used in our daily activities and to reduce our carbon footprint so that energy losses and corresponding costs can be reduced. The three spheres of sustainability: environment, economy, and society are explored through initiatives, critical thinking, research, challenges, and marketing projects.

The Center takes the position that our campus can be a working model for sustainable design, operation, and maintenance for our facilities, campus landscape, and natural environment.
