Maybury State Park

Description

Maybury State Park is a state park in Northville Township, Wayne County, Michigan composed of 944acre of gently rolling terrain, open meadow, and mature forest. The park gives people in the nearby metropolitan area an opportunity to get involved in outdoor recreation activities in a state park setting.HistoryLong before the park became a haven for picnickers, the isolated woods and farm fields held more than 40 buildings—infirmaries, houses, children's playgrounds and school—in a quarantined city for thousands of Detroit's highly infectious tuberculosis, at the time often called consumption, patients. Wealthy retired real estate tycoon William H. Maybury spearheaded Detroit's construction of the facility so thousands of TB sufferers could be removed from the city, and where the beautiful surroundings might help nurse some back to health. Most of the buildings were torn down before the land became Wayne County's first state park in 1975. Many of Maybury's paved walking trails are on former walks and roadways, although just four stone and brick doctors' residences remain, including one that serves as park headquarters.Facilities Maybury Farm Picnic Area Picnic Shelter - Reservation required Playgrounds StablesActivities Biking (paved) - 4mi Cross Country Skiing - 10mi Equestrian - 11mi Fishing Hiking - 15mi Mountain Biking - 5miMaybury FarmIn 2003 the DNR asked the Northville Community Foundation to take over the operations of the Maybury Farm, which had been closed in 2002. An agreement was reached and the farm reopened in September 2005. In February 2003, a fire destroyed the main barns, some of the farm's equipment and killed many of the farm's animals. A public fundraaising campaign led to the rebuilding of the farm including moving 125-year-old barns from a nearby town. The reopened farm provides educational programming, sheep shearing, hay rides, corn maze and other public farming demonstrations.

"944 acres of rolling meadow and mature forests. Hiking, biking, equestrian and ski trails. Open 365 days annually for guests to enjoy nature close to suburbia. State of Michigan Recreation Passport required and may be purchased at each park entrance.Check out the seasonal Maybury Riding Stables April - November and Maybury Farm April - October for additional recreation and education opportunities."

I am a regular here because of the easy access and ample parking. My usual visit is for a three mile hike through its rolling, wooded terrain — a nice break from the gym or walking in the neighborhood. This place is large. I have not learned all of the walking paths; there are many! This park is the site of a past Sanitarium. The beautiful grounds contain signage of the old buildings and the history is quite interesting. This gem is absolutely beautiful. There’s something for everyone: picnic tables and shelters, extensive hiking trails that are well marked, mountain bike trails, paved walk/ride paths, play set and petting zoo for kids, pond/fishing, horses for hire. The paved trails are wide, smooth, and highly accessible; my mom really enjoyed this place with her motorized scooter. Parking is ample. Requires a state park permit. Or better yet, pay an up-charge to support your parks when you renew your license plate tabs so that you can enter without a hassle. If you like this review, please click on the Helpful button.
Our favorite local State Park for any season of the year! Excellent walking trails, paved or through the woods. Bring your dog , they love it! Bring your bike & ride on the paved trails or wooded bike trail off of the Beck Rd entrance. You can fish too with the kids off the docks near the Beck rd entrance. Ride horses in the summer or cross country ski in the winter.
Beautiful park!! I used the track chair for persons with mobility issues, and it was phenomenal! I'm a large woman, and it handled me easily. My guide was Barb from Friends of Maybury, and she was incredible. There are miles of trails. Highly recommended!!
Awesome biking trails as well as hiking trails. For a novice mountain biker, this is a great place to learn as it provides a good challenge. There are some good flows, nice obstacle, challenging climbs, and some fast downhills. As well as some log rollers, rock gardens, and one or two skinny's, enough to practice on as you get a feel for the sport. For the more experienced rider, you can knock out 2 laps easily and feel like you got a good ride in.
This is my “go-to”. Multiple trails to hike and bike. Perfect place for a leisurely walk. I heard it called the enchanted forest once. I absolutely love this place .
Absolutely beautiful park. The paths are well kempt and parking was not an issue at all. I highly recommend taking a trip here.
A great summer hike with three of my grandchildren. The highlight of our adventure was seeing a deer up close and meeting a really nice 99 year old gentleman and his wife and daughter
Beautiful state park. Easy hiking trail from the parking lot through the forest to the pond. Beautiful fall colors. Another easy nice trail is the bluebird trail with dozens of bluebird boxes to encourage nesting. Only compliant is park map doesn't label the names of the trails so you should research which trails you want to do before you go!
I absolutely love Maybury State Park! I bring my dogs here to walk all the time. I love that there are so many different loops you can take, short and long, paved, flat, and easy through the woods and a nice, more hilly path through the woods and around the lake. Beautiful park, well maintained, nice bathrooms no matter what part of the park you're in. Highly recommend it! Restrooms: Clean and well maintained Dog-friendliness: Great place to walk your dog or dogs. I love the sign that they have letting you know that "All dogs must be on a 6 foot leash, yes, even yours!"
Very Good Trail. Little left over water in Summer in Pond. Hope it will be OK in some time
