McHenry Museum

About

McHenry Museum is a history museum with emphasis on Modesto and Stanislaus County history.

Description

The McHenry Museum is a City of Modesto owned facility supported by the City and McHenry Museum & Historical Society. The McHenry Museum is charged with preservative and exhibiting Modesto and Stanislaus County history. The building was constructed with funds bequeathed by Oramil McHenry in his will of 1906. Construction was complete by 1912 and the McHenry Library became a reality. In the mid 1971 the new county library was opened just north of the McHenry Library Location. The McHenry Library became the McHenry Museum with The Central California Art League occupied four rooms in the basement which were developed into galleries to display local artists work. The main floor was developed into the McHenry Museum. The museum continued in that configuration until 2003 when the Art League moved to new quarters and the museum was able to utilize the entirety of the building. A fund raising campaign by the McHenry Museum & Historical Society provided funds to transform the art galleries into museum vignettes. The use of the new space required a complete reorganization of both the main floor and basement spaces. This is the current configuration of the Museum.

Nice little museum in Modesto that goes over regional history in the former town library. Free entrance, but donations accepted. Temp check and masks still required. Museum is two stories, and there's a small museum store. Make sure you go in time to see the McHenry Mansion across the street - oh, and the paperboy statue is super close, too.
This is a free museum! They have the main floor and a basement full of interesting things to look through. The staff are very friendly and helpful. It’s a nice little museum and worth a look through while you’re in town.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
I took my wife here so we could learn more about the area. We just moved here from Utah, and we loved this museum. The house is amazing, and the staff was very knowledgeable. I gave it 4 stars because it's not the most exciting exhibit I have ever been to, and the parking situation is not ideal. I would definitely recommend this place. One thing I would add is to leave your small kids at home if they tend to be rowdy. If you do bring them, don't let them run around screaming and climbing all over the exhibits. I was very disappointed during our trip with some individuals who lacked the parenting skills to keep their children/grand children in check.
This is a great free museum at Modesto! There are so many interesting things to see and learn about the city Modesto and Stanislaus County! There are two floors of exhibits! The staff are very friendly and nice!!! It is definitely worth its high rating! Highly recommend visiting here! Note: The safety protocol against Covid is good! Self-served sign-in! Masks are required! Everyone’s temperature would be checked at the door with an automatic machine!
Very friendly. And how can you go wrong with cool displays of Modesto old time history. Music, war time, trains, old past on collectables and more. The only problem is you can't really take it all in in one visit.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entryFree
Visited the museum for the first time 2 months ago. Definitely worth the hour and a half drive. The traffic on the way there, not a big fan. But the museum and what it encloses was well worth it. So much history and amazing artifacts from the past. I encourage you to check it out for yourself.
We absolutely loved all the fabulous displays they had. My son loved the military display, but had to correct them on one item they had saying it wasn't used in Vietnam but that it was much newer and should be marked "Operation Iraqi Freedom" era is the year 2000 or better. I just smiled. He is so good about anything military no matter what it is..always has been and he's just 18. The video I took was of their amazing button collection and it was for my neighbor that also collects button. But it won't let me post that. Just a few small item pics I took. I wish I had taken more photos of the displays, but definitely worth the visit!
Went here with my husband today and had an amazing time!! Such a nice and clean environment full of fascinating history from our counties history! The staff was extremely knowledgeable and kind and made the experience even more comforting! Thank all of you for keeping the history of our county alive and taking such good care of all the precious artifacts of days past!!
My aunt and uncle have been a big part of this museum for a lot of years. My kids had a lot of fun visiting with their Nona on the kids' dad's side.
First off this is a community based museum that means its FREE it is a donation based museum if you can please do! But if your low on funds and want to take the family out this is a Great place to Go visit to learn about the city's foundation! I brought my 9yr old she read all the captions took us 2 1/2 hours to tour the whole place. If you just walk thru it can take no time at all. We came back to bring the rest of the family dad and Nana and we spotted even more things we missed the first time. The staff is kind and informative. There are toys, paintings, tools and more that Date back to the 1800s. We will be back to see what else we missed when we walked thru next time.
