In 2020 we put my father in law, in their care. We had a funeral trust that had to be used up which was very generous. We were given a rookie funeral director who was god awful. She didn’t get anything right. The songs were out of order, the pall bearers were given no instructions and she never dismissed the funeral after the minister was finished. We all just sat there while she was out visiting with some of the women who worked there. I’ve been to funerals in small towns and most in Des Moines and this was the worst. There are too many other funeral homes in the area to go through something like this. You can’t redo a funeral.
Our family started to think about funeral & Burial arrangement. We looked at few locations around us. During the initial / educational meetings we came to the understanding that the process entails three separate items Funeral, Burial, & Cemetery Plots. In July 2023, we started with Dignity Memorial Location, McLaren’s Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines as it will provide the three items we need. We were looking for pre-arrangement for four family members. After multiple meetings with Mr. Tom Bogenski and careful selection of what we need, we came to the following: 1- We were able to buy four cemetery plots from another family. 2- The total cost for Funeral & Burial Arrangement for four persons is around $51K. 3- To make the process a little bit affordable, we requested to drop the “Included Lunch Meal” for each person, the final total cost came to be a little over $47K Not including the plots which were already done. We requested a printout and a day or two to give it a second thought, then execute the contract. On our next meeting I was surprised that Mr. Bogenski retracted the $47K and said it was an error and it will be $51K despite the dropped four lunch meals. We were quite disappointed because we were in agreement that is why we went ahead and bought 4 Cemetery Plots at their Cemetery. Now, we have 4 plots we need to sell. In an attempt to rectify this situation, we made a complaint to the Corporate Office in TX. After the intake call, we received a call from Mr. Tanner Sales Manager in West Des Moines asking for a meeting to get a resolution. When we met, Mr. Tanner informed me that the $51K was an error and the correct quote will be around $53K!!! I left, speechless... My advice for anyone who would like to do business with McLaren’s Resthaven Cemetery: 1- Quotes are Fluid, Keep Records! 2- When you negotiate, negotiate the three Funeral, Burial & Plots at the same time. 3- When you are ready to sign contracts, make sure that it matches your previous offer. 4- Share your Pre-Planned Arrangements with your loved ones as you will not be there when you need it.
Andy and all the staff made us feel like family during this difficult time in our lives. Their service was top notch and we could not have been more satisfied.
In the time of grief and not knowing the process, the Funeral director Andrew Wegener and Family Service Counselor Tom Bogenski took the time to sit with us explaining step by step and everything in detail. They definitely took our time of sorrow seriously and that goes a long way. We very much appreciated the hand holding at a time of sorrow. I definitely recommend this Funeral Home to anyone. We had a unique situation and McLarens was able to accommodate our needs. My father-in-law and my husband both died within 36 hours of each other. We worked with Andy, who was both professional and personable. My father-in-law had arrangements made with McLarens; however, my husband's fund was at Hamilton's. Hamilton's was unable to accommodate the date we needed to coordinate with his father's passing so we called Andy and he was able to arrange both funerals and all the details that go along with that without skipping a beat. The entire staff was pleasant and helpful. Would highly recommend McLarens!
My parents, Dale and Muriel Boone, purchased a family plot for six with faith that it would be a beautiful place for eternity. Sadly, for the third consecutive Memorial Day, when the cemetery should be looking its best, I found the plot being used to store mounds of leaves raked into the area. This, after each year talking with a Resthaven official who took my comments seriously but was whose head groundskeeper has been disrespectfully unresponsive. When the time came to lay my mother to rest McLaren's Resthaven was patient and professional. Our family thanks everyone we worked with. Her wishes were carried out the way she wanted. Already established as an honorable, solid, and peaceful presence in our community, McLarens has now secured its place as our family's care giver in time of need.
