McLean County Orthopedics

About

MCO treats all types of orthopedic conditions and offers a comprehensive range of services.

Description

The leading orthopedic practice in Central Illinois

McLean County Orthopedics was founded in 1976 by Dr. Jerald Bratberg, a graduate of Harvard Medical School. Since that time, MCO has treated over 50,000 patients and attracted the finest physicians, therapists, nurses, technicians, and administrative staff totaling over 90 employees.

MCO treats all types of orthopedic conditions and offers a comprehensive range of services.

Most patients can call for an appointment themselves, although there are some insurance companies (ie Health Alliance, OSF) that require a referral from a primary care physician.

MCO also started and spun-off The Center for Outpatient Medicine (TCOM), which is the only surgery center in McLean county certified for overnight stay.

You can find McLean County Orthopedics on Route 9 (Empire Street), across from the old Bloomingon airport.

I have been “seeing” Dr. Michaels for several months for severe neck and back pain. My neck pain is better but that’s because my work place therapist had me move my monitors. Now after waiting for six weeks for a follow up appointment for my back, I show up and find out they’d cancelled my appointment without telling me because I was supposed to see the nurse practitioner again before I got to see the doctor. I can’t stand or walk for more than 15 minutes and I was really counting on this appointment to do something to help. Just come back tomorrow they said. I live out of town and I have a job. Come back tomorrow is not an option I will be finding another doctor.
One of the better orthopedic centers in Central Illinois. Very nice building with a large waiting room and easy check-in. The staff of nurses and doctors are attentive, caring and knowledgeable. They are equipped to do many of the tests you may need. Plenty of parking in a large area and conveniently located a short distance off Empire.
PA Nick Von Holten has the worst bedside manner I've ever seen. He told me that surgery for my bone-on-bone knee pain would not be possible by any orthopedist in this half of the state. I'm glad he speaks for all SURGEONS around. As someone who has worked professionally in top-ranked hospitals and has education credentials as well, I was extremely appalled.
They like to charge for extra things that you don't want. Then submitted it to insurance in a way that you have to pay for it.
Dr. Oakey will make you feel like you are faking it. Either due to incompetence or belief that everyone is drug seeking.
I broke my arm twenty years ago and had screws put into it and also had damaged the elbow. The doctor who performed my surgery is not at the office that I originally went to, so a medical friend advised me to try McLean County Orthopedics. This friend also told me which doctor to ask for when I called to make an appointment. When I called, the phone was answered by a very rude woman who would not let me schedule an appointment with the doctor that I asked for and instead tried to book me an appointment with a doctor who works on hands and fingers. Hmmm…I told her I had broken my arm and was having pain and issues in the elbow, radius, and ulna. I never made an appointment there. Horribly rude person answering the phone who wouldn’t even schedule me with the correct doctor. I would not recommend going here.
Waited 40 min didn't even get called to the back. Got up and told the front desk i was leaving because apparently they were too busy to see me and although I'm not an important DR. but a busy person too. I called the manager qnd explained my frustrations with the visit and to ensure I wouldn't be billed. A week later I got a letter saying i was abusive to one of their staff!!!!! I never used foul language and only stated facts. Unbelievable treatment to a patient!
HORRIBLE SURGEON HORRIBLE PHYSICAL THERAPY DEPARTMENT….I only say horrible surgeon because he basically assaulted me on his clinic table during a visit. Dr. Mark Hansen is lucky I didn’t retaliate for showing aggressive tendencies when maneuvering my knee, Mark Hansen is a passive aggressive being. Very tactful individual for sure but I notice and see everything. Lmfao Well I’ve waited a year and here is a accurate objective review of this Podunk Midwest clinic. I had knee surgery there a years ago and the procedure went well with Dr Hansen however their PT department re-tore my meniscus. If you want surgery come here however I highly recommend St.Joseph’s PT clinic for post op. I don’t even really know where to begin, the post op sessions at their PT clinic was horrible as i was receiving treatment for major surgery however was under the care of a student and had like 4 different techs taking care of me, it was horrible to say the least. I explained to the Therapist everything about my physical past and let them know that this was my 5th procedure. I explained Everything to them about my knees, diet; activity level, pain tolerance level..thinking they would listen and take my information shared into consideration. Wow that was a waste of time. I’ll finish this later, going to find paperwork so I can accurately name names in this review
Impossible to work with: This is an update of a previous review in which I described being unable to schedule an appointment because of unanswered phones and other problems. Recently I requested patient records so we could schedule with a different provider. Weeks later, those records haven't been sent and my inquiry about this has been ignored. Honestly, stay away from this place unless you have the time and energy to basically be the office conscience, because NCO isn't going to willingly lift a finger on your behalf.
I sprained my ankle back in May and my improvement has been minimal at best. I have been seeing Dr. Buffington and have tried to be patient with his treatment plan, but after reading the notes on the portal, I realize that he has not listened to anything I’ve said, not once. The only positive interactions I have had have been with the physical therapists there. Miss Recker has been wonderful and you can tell she is knowledgeable about what she does. Her notes even coincide with what actually occurred during treatment as well as the other therapist I have seen, Miss Simpson. The doctor’s notes say I have pain in places I don’t have pain, says I don’t have pain in places I do have pain, and now I’m showing signs of nerve damage. He stated it was “occasional” in his notes which is untrue. I cannot feel my foot and ankle for most of the day, and am having more balance issues now. Dr. Buffington tried to suggest that I had this in both feet before, nope, never have, but I did develop this due to lack of proper treatment and it’s only progressed, not improved. He states in his notes he performed a Semmes Weinstein test, so I did a quick google search to see what that even was, and I know 100% that this has never been done because I’ve never even seen the device that is used to do this test, nor did I know it even existed. The only reason my pain has improved is because I can’t feel my ankle and foot. Numbness is moving up to my knee and all that was suggested was to wear a brace now, instead of a boot, continue PT and follow up in 2 weeks. I’m getting a second opinion now at a different Orthopedic office and canceling any further appointments.
