Megan's Paws and Claws was created when the parents of Megan Elizabeth Kitchen started a memorial fund in her memory after she lost her life in a car crash at the young age of 17 on December 12, 2008. Lori and Tom Kissinger says Megan loved animals and she often brought home stray animals to love and care for. The Smithville community helped bring Megan's fund to nearly $50,000 in monetary and in-kind donations and the Kissingers decided to donate the money raised to the City of Smithville for the construction of a new No-Kill dog pound. The pound has 13 indoor/outdoor kennels with heating and air and a large play yard for the dogs.
