Melvin's Legendary Barbecue

Had dinner here. Got the pulled pork plate, 1/4 dark chicken plate and six smoked wings combo. Pulled pork was sweet from their sauce mixed in; the chickens were smoked well. The soda machine was broke so had to get either lemonade or iced tea. The sides collard greens, sweet potato soufflé and fried okra were delicious. The fried onion rings were huge but the crust was too sweet.

Maurice's to Melvin's.... it's liquid gold in SC. from Columbia to Charleston the Bessinger name is built on BBQ... I grew up eating at Piggie Park in Columbia in the '60s- my dad loved the place while stationed at FT. Jackson. So I've driven by and just hadn't had a chance to give Melvin his shot... a good smoked pork tumbled in a SC golden mustard sauce. A staple of the central SC lowlands.

We have found our favorite BBQ place in Mt. Pleasant! The pulled pork plate was phenomenal! We didn't wait barely 5 minutes after ordering and the food came out hot and fresh! Definitely recommend if you're in the area to stop and try them out!Food: 5/5

The food is delicious, and they give you more than enough to fill up. I really enjoyed the collard greens, mac and cheese, brisket, lemonade, and banana pudding.Food: 5/5

Beloved BBQ in Mt Pleasant and Charleston. Everything on the menu is so good, traditional southern food. I regularly get the vegetable plate. Green beans, butter beans, sweet potato casserole, and Mac & cheese are my favorite. The brisket grilled cheese is heaven in your mouth. The BBQ chicken pieces are so very flavorful and tender and melt in your mouth. We have gotten the fill rack of ribs and can eat on it for 2 days between 2 people. Very good leftover. Burgers are great too. The banana pudding and milk shakes are a must. There other traditional southern desserts are so good too but they sellout so get them early. I love this place and eat at the Mt pleasant and James Island ones regularly.

EDIT: Melvins continues to be excellent. I usually have go to spots to eat, but this is NOW one of them. Every time I order, it is always perfect. And ill tell you that the staff here, AMAZING. great people all around, I am telling you now this is my ONLY BBQ spot, you can try whatever, but this place is CONSISTENT. Thank u guys for great food!! Recommended: Ribs, Chicken, Burgers and every appetizer.

Not sure what is going on here or who is in charge. When standing at the register with menu in hand for five minutes without acknowledgment, the manager asks have we been helped only to ignore us another five minutes - we leave. I wanted bbq so bad but got better service and food by traveling ten minutes to Sullivan’s for HomeTeam. Thanks for recommendation.

My overall rating is a 8.7/10. For example 7/10 is good. The turkey, cheeseburger, and ribs were amazing. I mean this is the best turkey I have ever had. Also the service was absolutely amazing. This would be a great place to take your family to eat. Also they may have the biggest onion rings ever! One last thing is it was exceptionally clean.

The cooks added old okra with the fresh okra. Pulled pork little taste not the best today-metallic.Food: 2/5

With Legendary in the name, one already expects a good meal, and the experience did not disappoint. This was my first visit to this establishment of the Bessinger family. Having lived in Columbia for a number of years, I have sampled the menu of Maurice Bessinger, a brother whose style focuses on the mustard-based BBQ common in the Midlands of SC. Melvin's does not have this same style and goes in its own tasty direction. I sampled the brisket, which was good, but I should have selected the pork sandwich for this first visit. Hopefully, next time. Melvin's offers quite an array of sides, and I enjoyed the SC slaw as mine. A great place to eat and part of the Lowcountry.
