Faculty: Lukas B. Vesely Music Director, teacher Piano, Bass, Voice, Theory and Harmony Jazz Rock Pop Classical Lukas Vesely lives and breathes music. Born in Prague, in the Czech Republic, and immigrating to the US with his family at the age of three, Lukas was destined to follow in his father’s footsteps. Mila Vesely, an accomplished and successful jazz/rock woodwind and bass player in Europe, would naturally pass those gifts onto his eldest son. Only four years later, at the age of seven, Lukas took up piano. Even at a young age, the musical influences were diverse. Classical studies went alongside with artists like The Beatles’ and countless jazz musicians as well. At the age of thirteen, Lukas took up both guitar and bass, while never leaving sight of the piano. Lukas recalls his teenage years in the 90’s as, “Awesome.” He remembers “…jamming outside during recess in junior high to old rock songs like Bob Dylan’s, “Knocking on Heaven’s Door”, and The Beatles, “Yesterday”. Lukas was at that point, officially hooked on guitar. Numerous outstanding achievements would follow including those recognized world round. His budding recognition would culminate in a full tuition scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, while he also started teaching at the Stanford University Jazz Workshop. Lukas worked with and learned from great jazz artists such as Joe Henderson, Ray Brown, Marcus Belgrave, Steve Coleman, Gregory Hutchinson, and Oscar Stagnaro, just to name a few. In 1998, Lukas traveled to Japan on an ambassador tour sponsored by Berkleat various venues including the world famous Star Eyes in Nagoya. Later on that year, Lukas also had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with world renowned classical and new age clarinetist, Richard Stoltzman. This prompted a series of concerts including one performed at the Hollywood Bowl with his pianist son, Peter Stoltzman, and Alex Acuna on drums. Lukas’s intense love and devotion to music would not develop without physical consequences. Severe tendentious and thoracic outlet syndrome halted him momentarily. What some might have considered a set-back, Lukas took as an opportunity to relearn music, and to begin a journey into searching for inner balance. He took the following years to broaden his outlook on “energy” and all of its forms. Having the natural inclinations towards music that Lukas indeed has, he also took this time to continue his exploration of less familiar music. His interest branched out to World Music including but not limited to sounds from Africa, India and other Eastern countries. During this year and a half of meditation and rejuvenation, Lukas began playing the flute. It was also during the early 2000's that Lukas began composing a lot of his contemporary jazz and ambient music. This eventually helped him get back into performing and teaching bass and piano. Through music, Lukas had finally found a way to effortlessly focus on expressing his spirit. Lukas has been teaching privately for ten years now and offers instruction in beginning guitar, all levels of bass (acoustic and electric) and piano, as well as voice. He has a very holistic approach to teaching music, helping the student explore and find their own voice as well as instilling in them a very solid foundation in music theory, harmony, and rhythm.
