Merrill College

Description

Merrill College is a residential college at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The theme of the college, and the name of its freshman core course, is "cultural identities and global consciousness."LocationMerrill is located at the far northeastern corner of the University of California, Santa Cruz campus, east of Crown College and north of Cowell and Stevenson colleges. The college sits at the top of a hill and can only be reached by steep access roads and pedestrian paths. The grounds cover approximately nine acres of land (the smallest of the residential colleges) covered largely by tall redwood trees.HistoryMerrill was founded in 1968 as the fourth college at UCSC. The college takes its name from Charles E. Merrill Jr., former Headmaster of the Commonwealth School in Boston. In 1968, Merrill was the chairman of the Charles E. Merrill Trust, named for his father, Charles E. Merrill, Sr., the founder of Merrill Lynch. It was in this year that the Trust elected to donate funds for the construction of the hitherto-named College Four at Santa Cruz. The first three colleges at UCSC all had clearly identified academic specialties before their founding: Cowell in the humanities, Stevenson in the social sciences, and Crown in the natural sciences. However, Merrill allowed its early faculty and students to determine its theme. The college originally intended to focus on international studies, but an early shift towards global poverty led to its eventual emphasis on the developing countries and their cultures, as well as the impact of the United States in the developing world.

My child went to this school and it was one of the worst experiences we ever had. A situation which proved it was when my kid was feeling absolutely horrible and showing visible signs of discomfort and sickness, they made them stay at school and refused to let them out. Zero ability to stop bullying. I feel bad for the few staff that genuinely care about the students but the bad outway the worse. ALOT. Should have never brought my kid here. Before you apply your child here, please do rethink it and choose any of the more helpful schools.
This school has continuously let my niece down. My niece tells the school she is being bullied but yet she’s the one being removed from the class like she’s the problem. My niece has told the teachers she struggles with the work but they don’t help her and then tells me what’s the point in going to class if the teachers are not going to help me. It took the school three hours to notify my brother that my niece was not in school. Would not recommend sending your children to this school they don’t care about the pupils at all.
Walking home from school today, I witnessed three higher years pinning a year seven student up and threatening him with what looked like a pipe. "No bullying policy". There's so much bullying going on in this school it's unreal. Can't wait to leave...
I didn't think this kind of a School still existed ! Since my daughter went there last yr she has started being bullied, stones thrown at her her ad punched in the stomach , the girls are covered in make-up clothing unbelievable , the amount who smoke is out of control even on school grounds, she has reported glue sticks rubbers pencils been thrown in class and the teachers can't control , my daughter is now depress self harming which has reduced over Christmas Holidays, I feel bad for sending her there after she had been in John Port , but not much of choice when you have no car. On the bullying side the punch to the stomach punishment was less servers than if your late as you get a 45 min detention, how's that work .. Please I would urge parent not to send your child here .
I do not like this school, the majority of the students who attend this school speak unpleasantly and they use far too much 'slang'. I am a student who goes to this school myself and I find it rather annoying when I walk around and see students smoking, swearing and once in a while a fight. This school needs many much-needed improvements for this rating to increase even though it is unlikely that these needed improvements will happen.
My son gose here and it’s as bad as Noel Baker Academy bullies galore kids seem to rule the school always hanging round the reception area seen personally kids kicked punched pushed over my sons got needs and the school dosnt seem. To care unless he runs round the school he’s been bullied for yrs still nothing done do not let your kids go to this school
