Minnehaha Creek

Description

Minnehaha Creek is a 22-mile-long tributary of the Mississippi River that flows east from Gray's Bay Dam on Lake Minnetonka through the suburban cities of Minnetonka, Hopkins, Saint Louis Park, and Edina, and the city of Minneapolis. The creek flows over Minnehaha Falls in Minnehaha Park near its mouth at the Mississippi River.HistoryAs with much of the Midwest, the area around the creek and Lake Minnetonka was originally inhabited by a native culture affiliated with the Mound Builders, but by the 1700s was occupied by the Mdewakanton People, a sub-tribe of the Dakota. The first Euro-Americans whose expedition to the area was documented were Joe Brown and Will Snelling, who canoed up the creek from Fort Snelling.WatershedThe creek's watershed covers 181 square miles, including the basin of Lake Minnetonka, and is managed by the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District.

I might be quite partial to Minnehaha Creek, but I think that it must be the greatest urban area creek in Minnesota. Coyotes, foxes, herons, mergansers, mallards, egrets, night herons, otters, beavers, northerns, snapping turtles, wood ducks, night herons, bald eagles, red tailed hawks, kestrels, king fishers, American toads, frogs, and so many more creatures create a beautiful ecosystem. Paddling the creek is a peaceful experience. Snowshoeing, sledding, and skiing the creek is quiet and serene.
I grew up on East Minnehaha Parkway across the street from the Creek and the 17th Ave. sliding hill. What a great place to grow up. We could walk or bike to Minnehaha Falls about 2 miles away. I walked along the Creek on my way to Washburn High School. I really miss living along the Creek, you take things for granted when you're a kid. It's so beautiful.
A quiet little place underneath Nicolette Avenue on Minnehaha Creek that is nice to get a moment's Peace at.
Clean and a great area to let your dogs swim a bit.
It was so much fun. Can’t wait to go back.
Happy trails.
Beautiful!!!!
