Mission Santa Inés

Description

Mission Santa Inés is a Spanish mission in the present-day city of Solvang, California, and named after St. Agnes of Rome. Founded on September 17, 1804 by Father Estévan Tapís of the Franciscan order, the mission site was chosen as a midway point between Mission Santa Barbara and Mission La Purísima Concepción, and was designed to relieve overcrowding at those two missions and to serve the Indians living east of the Coast Range. The mission was home to the first learning institution in Alta California and today serves as a museum as well as a parish church of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.HistoryMost of the original church was destroyed on December 21, 1812 in an earthquake centered near Santa Barbara that damaged or destroyed most of California's missions. The quake also severely damaged other mission buildings, but the complex was not abandoned. A new church, constructed with 5to walls and great pine beams brought from nearby Figueroa Mountain, was dedicated on July 4, 1817. A water-powered grist mill was built in 1819, about half a mile from the church. In 1821, a fulling mill was added, designed by newly arrived American immigrant Joseph John Chapman.

It was not crowded when visiting. Unfortunately did not take a tour. Just strolling outside the premise you'll get to see some nice sights. Great view of land from the parking lot parking lot on the premise. The small garden is beautiful.Visited onWeekend
Parking: free and in front of the mission with a big lot. Unlike other missions, this one is not state operated, it's a functional parish, the church and grounds have no entry fee. The church might be closed for private events like weddings at times. The church is beautiful and like old Mexican and European churches with lots of old icons, art and statues! I wish they used the old altar, the new one is out of place for the building. A must see if your in Solvang
Tremendously gorgeous church which is still in use today. Even if you don't get inside the church, the views near by are enjoyable. From walking around on paved paths, to admiring the architecture, and also looking at the overlook of vast grassy fields, this is an enjoyable visit in Slovang. Not a must visit in the city, but fun nonetheless.
Historic mission with active Catholic Church allows self-guided tours for $8. The tour covers the historic structures, models for past structures, some artifacts, original bells, historical timeline, access to the church sanctuary, the gardens and cemetery. There is also a good bit of artwork associated with the mission on display throughout. A paper guide is provided. There is a small gift shop, which is where you pay for the tour. Free public parking is available outside the mission, a very short walk. There are also restrooms adjacent to the parking lot. These are the only available restrooms for visiting the mission, but it is not a long walk.
This is a small Mission but beautiful and it's a must see if you like the Missions.

If you love history, visit this old mission. It is beautiful. I did the tour and it is impressive. Go :
I enjoy visiting Catholic churches, for education, culture and inspiration and to take the opportunity for some quiet time and prayer during business travel. I visited a few old churches here in the central California coast and am impressed with the longevity of these communities. This church charges an admission, which I'm happy to pay to help keep open and available to the public. The entrance is to the left of the main doors at the souvenir shop. You walk from the shop through several rooms that illustrate the history of the mission. I couldn't spend much time here and may come back for more in depth reading. The museum and church was not busy and I did have time for quiet prayer. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained. I don't know if it is appropriate to picnic here, but would make for a great stop with family.
Had an afternoon lunch under the tree on the picnic tables. Lots of people stop by, but they are never intrusive or loud. Great place for photos.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
