Moonridge Animal Park

Description

The Big Bear Alpine Zoo is a zoo in Big Bear Lake, California, United States. It is one of two Alpine zoos in the United States! It specializes in rehab and release of local Alpine species and also has a permanent collection of animals in their zoo (most of which can not be released). It is located across the street from Bear Mountain Ski Resort.HistoryThe Big Bear Alpine Zoo has been saving alpine wildlife since 1959. Originally it was not a zoo, but a safe place for injured animals to rehabilitate and get a second chance back in the wild. The facility is owned and operated by Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District, a Special District of the County of San Bernardino. The Big Bear Alpine Zoo is a rehabilitation facility offering injured, orphaned and imprinted wild animals a safe haven; temporarily while they heal or permanently as they are unable to survive on their own. 90% of all animals brought to the zoo for rehabilitation are successfully released back onto their native environment. Those that remain on exhibit are either too injured or have been imprinted by humans and cannot be released back into the wild to care for themselves. The "Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo" was formed in 1989 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) public-benefit corporation whose purpose is to support the Big Bear Alpine Zoo through: (1) Educating the public regarding treatment, protection, and conservation of wildlife; (2) Recruiting and coordinating park volunteers; and (3) Fundraising.AnimalsThe Big Bear Alpine Zoo provides wildlife rehabilitation and release. Those animals that cannot be released are given a home for life in the zoo. The Big Bear Alpine Zoo is the only zoological facility located in an alpine forest specializing in alpine species. zoo residents include grizzly bears, black bears, cougars, wolves, and eagles, to name a few of the 160 animals representing 80 species.

An inexpensive adventure to take in few bears, birds, and a variety of other mountain type animals. Was a bit of a warm day and the animals weren't that active. Recommend going in the morning. Heard some of these animals were recovering. Would have been great to read some background on them. My 2 year old spent half his time playing on the playground equipment 1/2 way through the enclosure. Had a nice souvenir shop. Very nice employees throughout the zoo
We enjoyed our visit here. Yes, it's small and yes, the enclosures are way too small for the predator animals like the Mountain Lion & Coyotes. But it's clean and there is a variety of animals to see. The staff were nice. It's a little pricey, but the money goes to a good cause!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitPrice for adult entry$16–20
Great place to take the kids, small but very nice Zoo with bears, birds, deer, and foxes. Small playground is an added bonus. I suggest going early in the summer months as it is in the sun. Small gift shop with very reasonable prices. I look forward to going again.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$16–20
Very nice and well maintained small zoo. I remember coming to Big Bear and seeing this place near the ski place many years ago. I think it used to be called a sanctuary before, now labeled a zoo. Everything is new and the animals appeared to be taken care of. Nice place to visit with the kids when in the area.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Nice little zoo in Big bear! It will be fun for kids and usually takes less than an hour to walk around! There are many animals and birds to see but keep in mind that they will be in the shadows if it’s too hot when you visit!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$16–20
The zoo is very small but nice. It's worth the visit. I can't speak on the gift shop because we waited 45 minutes for it to open, and when it didn't, even after they said it would only be 5 minutes, we left with some very disappointed children.Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$16–20
Awesome zoo with a variety of cute and big animals. Such an amazing place that cares deeply about their animals that can no longer be released back to the wild.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$16–20
This place sure is different from what I remember years ago. It had definitely had a major makeover and their wildlife is sparse but impressive. They have a couple of black bears and 3 grizzley bears there now. It's crazy seeing them up close since there are viewing staff with thick plastic. My favorite was the bobcat that came to the front of the enclosure when my wife called to it. Apparently it was found when it's eyes weren't even open and it imprinted on humans. Going this fun little fact in the calendar they sell at the gift shop btw Overall it was a short but satisfying visit. I would even venture to say that the $15/person entrance fee is worth it to keep these rescue animals in relative comfort.
This is a sweet zoo that is a bit bigger than expected. My family and I love seeing the grey wolf, snow leopards, and of course the amazing grizzly bear! Well worth the price of admission. I would recommend coming early in summer months before it gets too hot, that way the animals are likely to be more active.
It was a very pleasant experience here, its a rather small zoo but it was very clean and well kept. My only concern was with the gray wolf who was pacing in circles and panting. It was a very hot day and It genuinely didn't seem like there was any sort of water available to him. Price for entry: $15.00
