Moran State Park

Description

Moran State Park is a public recreation area on Orcas Island in Puget Sound's San Juan Islands in the state of Washington, United States. The state park encompasses over 5,000 acres of various terrain including forests, wetlands, bogs, hills, and lakes. It is the largest public recreation area in the San Juan Islands and the fourth largest state park in the state. A park focal point is the observation tower atop Mount Constitution. In 2013, the state park was added to the National Register of Historic Places.HistoryThe park was originally the estate of Seattle mayor and shipbuilder Robert Moran. Due to poor health, Moran moved to Orcas Island and between 1906 and 1909 built his estate, which included a large mansion named Rosario. Wood and stone material found on the island were used to construct the estate's houses and buildings. In 1921, Moran gave a large portion of his property to the state of Washington for the creation of Moran State Park. The mansion and its grounds remain in private hands, operated as Rosario Resort and Spa.In August 1935, 28 men from the 4768th Company of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began constructing a stone observation tower atop 2409ft Mount Constitution. Designed by noted Seattle architect Ellsworth Storey, the tower became the literal and figurative high point of eight years of work by crews from the CCC's Camp Moran.

Outstanding campground. Calm place with high and big trees. Enjoyable hike to waterfalls and around lake. Warm water in a lake, kids enjoyed several days of sweeming. Booking a bit tough and should be done upfront especially ferry reservation is tough and their site usually keeps failing with slow performance.
Went to Orcas for the day with the wife and 9 yr old daughter and ended up in Moran State Park. Did the Cascade Lake Loop, absolutely gorgeous and perfect hike for the kiddo, just under 3 miles, not much elevation and beautiful views of the lake almost all the way around. Playground: Small playground at the day use swimming beach Restrooms: Well kept restrooms Picnic area: Several places to stop for a picnic. We just laid a blanket down by the swimming beach and had a bite before more exploring
Love this place. Have visited many times and camped several. A variety of hikes both in terms of difficulty and experience. By the latter I mean a short small valley trail, around the lake loop trails, and up the mountain through forest with vistas from thousands of feet up. And a little "castle" too. The last 3 night trip I got in two hikes. paddled my yak and swam in 2 different awesome little lakes. At night, a 10 min walk to the lake shore to view the moonlight on the lake. Winner. Also, the dork in me loves the rare firewood vending machine. Great to help the effort of not transporting firewood between eco systems and just cool at the use of tech. Yes, I feed it my credit card and a bundle of wood comes rolling down the shoot. Campsites are a little small and can be kind of close together though it varies across the 3 campgrounds. You have to ask yourself if you are there for remotness and privacy no or easy access / close probity to one of the lakes. 4 sure. bathrooms were clean and stocked. Playground: Cool little playground at the lake side swim and restroom area. Picnic area: Many good places to picnic from the lakeside park to the top of Mt. Constitution and its great views.
I really liked State Park camping. My campsite was facing to the lake. Closer to lake shore beach. I did a lot of hiking in the morning then SUP board paddling in the afternoon. 10mins drive to small downtown. Restroom was clean. Restrooms: Restroom was clean in overall. Dog-friendliness: It's dog friendly park which I met with a lot of doggies
One of my favorite parks to visit and camp in. Lots of recreation options, with multiple trails of various lengths, waterfalls, lakes, viewing tower on top of Mt. Constitution, and lots of campsites. For a kid-friendly hike, try the Cascade Falls trail or the Mountain Lake trail. Most campsites are spacious with decent privacy, plus lake views from many. My only complaint is the showers; as with nearly every Washington State Park, the money box says 50cents for 3 minutes, but it never actually lasts 3 minutes. The middle campground showers were timed at 2 minutes, 38 seconds. WA Parks needs to adjust their timers or change the wording to make it accurate.
Great place to relax, hike, rent a kayak, canoe or rowboat at Cascade Lake. Stunning view to the east from the top of Mount Constitution. Views here from Cascade Lake and South trail on Turtleback Mountain not part of park. Playground: Busy! Restrooms: Changing rooms and outdoor shower.
The 2.2 mile hike from Little Summit to the Tower was amazing. Quite the workout and so many beautiful views and sights along the way. Awesome! Restrooms: Very nice restrooms at the Tower!
Another Washington State Parks gem. The campsite was clean and quiet. The hikes up to Mt. Constitution and around Cascade Lake are lovely. While you're in the area, check out the Coho Salmon preserve. It's small but packs a lot of beauty into a short but steep hike.
Thick wooded area with small, tight campsites on the hillside mid-camp. Quiet at night. Trail around Cascade Lake is nice. Don’t forget the east side trail is up above the roadway!
One of the best parks in the area to camp. The only challenge is that it is on an island so you have to plan ahead and book a ferry to get there. Also I was told that they don’t have bears there, so you don’t need to stress about that when camping. Playground: There is a playground near the lake and a “young ranger” program where kids can learn.
