Our Home provided a nurturing Home, a challenging education and a safe environment for the destitute and at-risk children in the State of Indiana. There was mentoring through teachers, officers, our Alumni Association, along with supporting organizations such as; the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of American Legion (and other organizations inclusive), to see to it that our students went on to have the opportunity to achieve their full potential and become responsible and independent citizens. The former Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's Home became a safe haven to thousands of children from 1886 until it was forced to close in 2009. This Alumni page is established to help keep a constant bond between our Alumnus and friends. They might be able to close the Home, but they will never break the bonds of brothers and sisters.
Susie Jackson-Yagher
I am a 1971 Graduate of Morton Memorial High School, located on the grounds of the former Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's Home. I was placed in the Home in 1969 with four other siblings; Stephen, Judy, Tammy and Joseph Jackson. Had our Father not served in the South Pacific in WWII, we would not have been able to be admitted to the Home.
I am a Lifetime Member of our Alumni Association and the proud recipient of the "Alumni Of The Year" Award in 2001 for establishing the Morton Memorial Alumni Homesite at MyFamily.com in 2000. (http://www.mortonmemorialalumni.org/isapi.dll?c=h&htx=page). I have been bringing our alumni members and friends the news, home history and posting photos since September of 2000. I am sure many of you have corresponded with me over the years during my attempts to bring our Alumni together.
We are all volunteers in this type of work. We owe nothing and ask nothing from no one. We give of our time freely out of this Labour Of Love. My only hopes in all I do is to keep the "Memories Of Our Home Alive" and to treat each other with love and respect.
If you are a "Home Hater"---this site is not for you....
