Quiet & Beautiful...historical cemetery located in Marietta Ohio...close to their downtown
To think that my grandfather is buried with the likes of important pioneers Col. Whipple, Dr. Samuel Hildreth, Rufus Putnam, etc. that founded Marietta in what was then the Northwest Territories and the beautiful mound is amazing. This is one of the most beautiful cemeteries I have ever visited. I have visited quite a few. I have been here numerous times, but this visit was brought to you by “The Pioneers” by David McCullough .
A truly ancient cemetary. Several of the tombstones predate the American Revolution. The centerpiece is the mound itself, overgrown with old-growth trees. Even if you don't have family buried in this cemetary, I would pay it a visit.
This is a must stop for anyone that is in or around Marietta, Ohio... not only does the Cemetery have tons of early Pioneer, Revolutionary War folks buried in it, by the Hopewell Indian Mound which has been preserved is absolutely amazing to see.... with the Mound Ring and Trench surrounding the Burial Mound, you will be totally thrilled with this visit...
Very old cemetery with the historic mound in the center where you can take steps to the top.
Stop by see old historical cemetery a beautiful old cemetery were soldiers and Indian are bury some people came to Ohio other state to settle here
Benoni Hurlburt, my 6x Great Grandfather, remembered at the Revolutionary War Veteran's Memorial. Scalped by Indians searching for food by Blennerhassett Island. Grave at Farmer's Castle lost to time and the plow.
If you're interested in the history of the area, a stroll through the cemetery is a worthwhile trip. There's a large native burial mound there with a peaceful rest stop at the top.
Viewing the mound and all of the older gravestones really gets you emotional.
Glory be! We went there to search up my husbands family, and it didn't take long, since it was nicely tended. Very nice, the neighborhood around it is stunning and the people very nice.
