Mount Albion Cemetery

Description

Mount Albion Cemetery is located on New York State Route 31 in the Town of Albion, New York, United States, east of the village of Albion, which owns and operates it. It is a rural cemetery established in the 1840s on a glacial drumlin. From its original 25acre, it has almost tripled in size. Graves are on terraces in the rolling terrain. Tall trees, including some locally rare species, maintain a parklike atmosphere. Its notable monuments include a local Civil War memorial, a chapel and entrance arch. The dead buried there include Rufus Bullock, the first Republican Governor of Georgia and nine congressmen from two other states beside New York.In 1976 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district. It was the first property in Orleans County listed on the Register, and is so far the only one in the Town of Albion.GroundsThe cemetery is a 70acre rectangular parcel on the south side of Route 31 between the Butts and Keitel Road intersections, 1.5mi east of the village of Albion. Its terrain is gently rolling, dominated by a 680ft hill in the southeast quadrant. The area is rural, with the cemetery's sandstone office and barn located opposite its main entrance, near another smaller cemetery across the street. Immediately west of the lot is a small business. On all other sides the cemetery is surrounded by open lots and worked fields.

6 out of 5 stars. The topography if this place is stunning. The tower is my main attraction, been there twice now. Lots of parking below the hill and it's a short walk to the tower's base. Check out my photos for some potentially concerning images of the staircase inside the tower; may not be a good idea for a less-than-confident climber. I weigh 200lbs and the thing didn't budge, but it certainly appears like it needs a repair. This spiral staircase is very tall and those photos of the cracks are both taken more than half way up. Didn't scare me from going to the top tho : Be safe out there!
Love walking here. There’s so many beautiful trees, the landscape is rolling and lovely. Really adore the firemen’s memorial pond with the koi. Also love the cemetery tower, although I wish there was a way to add lighting to the stairs where it gets super dark. Really interesting graves to see, too.
If you are looking for a great place to walk or hike, check this place out. Lots of great history here. The cemetary is on a large hill and terraced. You can get some great exercise walking around here. There is also a civil war monument with a spiral staircase inside to the top. Great view, you can see all the way to the lake.
A beautiful place to walk alone or with friends any time of the year. I love to home up to the tower and climb to the to. The view is amazing from there. With hundreds of years of history in the gravestones, it's like I'm walking through time whenever I'm here.
I love cemeteries with hills like these. When I moved to Rochester, I explored mount hope cemetery and it reminded me of home, in albion <3
Truly the most beautiful graveyard I have ever seen.
