Great selection of gear and clothing, fair prices and friendly service. If you are in the area hiking or camping and need something, chances are they have it.
I’ve shopped at Mountain Rec before, but had a great experience today. We took our four kids in to get ski rentals for the season. The shop was busy and they warned us they were running low on rental gear. But still they got us various sizes of boots and then skis and poles to try while being super friendly despite the madness of our four kids and several other customers. The three or four staff working in the rental shop were a great team and worked together to get us fully outfitted quickly without feeling rushed. Overall just a great experience.
Great store with very nice employees. They don’t have the biggest selection but what they do have is good. They need to get repair patch kits for tents, hammocks, tarps, sleeping bags, etc. They only have patch kits for sleeping pads.
I've always been a fan of this store, even since when they were next to Raleys. I like the service and they hire knowledgeable, helpful, young people. I'm here happy with the kayaks we've bought here as well as the shoes and clothing. There are some premium brands here. I just wish they'd carry more of the men's stuff they used to. The selection is somewhat less than it used to be in that respect.

Totally amazing store. The selection is wonderful and the service is far superior to the "big box" outdoor stores like REI. Great selection and they always have the best gear. I go frequently and often, keep it up guys. This is what local shopping should be like!!
Great Outdoors gear shop, nestled in the foothills of beautiful Grass Valley. I found the atmosphere very inviting, the store clean and the staff very pleasant, helpful and welcoming. The shop is well organized with high end clothing and accessories at a fair price. Clothing ranged from quality footwear, hiking and camping attire, as well as articles for snow and water activities for men, women and children. There is a board and ski service shop inside that includes gear rentals and repair help, a nice selection of survival supplies and necessities for camping/backpacking and even climbing gear. Guaranteed to find something for any outdoors enthusiast, whether purchasing for yourself, friend/loved one, or group event. I highly recommend.
Would rate 10 out of 5 if I could. For the people who don't like reading long reviews: Mountain Recreation is simply AMAZING, period. For those of you who want to know why: Mountain recreation has the nicest staff out of any business I know in Nevada County. All of them know a lot about various sport equipment, and they will help you find what fits you best size-wise and functionality-wise. They carry all the products you need for your outdoor adventures at the best price around. All of the items they carry in the store are top notch. If they happen to not have an Item in stock i.e. a helmet for your sister for Christmas, or a certain ski binding they will order it for you. On a whole other note, their ski repair and tune shop is the best in California. I've taken my skis to the ski resort shops, but not a single one of them can compare in price and quality. Mountain Recreation's shop is fast, efficient, and they don't cut corners on the job. Honestly, I'm in there every week to browse around or have them custom fit another pair of my boots or drill a new set of bindings on simply because I LOVE Mountain Recreation. To sum it up, Mountain Rec. has the best staff, best service, best knowledge, best quality, and best prices.
Mount Recreation is a first class store that provides top quality outdoor wear and equipment. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. A great asset to Nevada County!
