A website reviewing films and books with a different standard in mind! -Tim Bennett
Moviesandmemoirs.org is born out of passion for films and memoirs. As a Christian, I review them with this worldview in mind. In terms of movies, I enjoy a wide range of genres from both independent and mainstream releases: action, drama, war, documentary, literary adaption, western, Christian, and true stories. To give you an idea of movies I consider top-notch in the preceding categories: Collateral (Tom Cruise), Gran Torino (Clint Eastwood), Saints and Soldiers, Searching for Sugar Man, Sense and Sensibility (Emma Thompson), Pale Rider, The Blind Side, and Money Ball (Brad Pitt). Just so you understand my taste … I do not like to see detailed sex scenes and nudity or listen to an overabundance of vulgarities or swear words. I also don’t like to see a lot of gore and I don’t get kicks out of watching horror films (I battle to get rid of my fears, not invite new ones in.) Also, if a movie is overtly anti-God/ anti-Christian I probably will not watch it.
I also enjoy memoirs in a variety of genres. My favorite war memoir was Lone Survivor and I have read many. Some books I have liked by young people include: The Unlikely Disciple by Kevin Roose, The Story of My Life: An Afghan Girl on the Other Side of the Sky, and Scratch Beginnings by Adam Shepard. A favorite memoir of a son writing about his father was Messages From My Father by Calvin Trillin. A humorous memoir I liked was A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson.
On this blog I will try to concentrate on the movies and memoirs I liked but will occasionally include the ones I saw or read but would not recommend. I also will seek to give the reader an idea of what the book or movie is about with my opinions without giving too much information as to spoil the stories. I welcome your comments.
