The Commission's duties include administration of Pennsylvania's municipal police officer training and certification program.
The Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission was statutorily created by Act 1974-120 (53 P.S. 740-749) and charged to establish the Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Program. Administration of the program was given to the Pennsylvania State Police in response to a federal study urging improved standards and goals in police training. The Commission is also responsible for the certification and decertification of municipal police officers. Officers require certification by the Commission prior to enforcing the crimes code, moving violations of the vehicle code, or carrying a firearm. Certification is based on completion of the 754-hour basic training course, or a waiver of training because of completing equivalent training and passing a certification examination.
