Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI)

About

Exploring the past, understanding the present, and inspiring a better future.

Description

Open until 8 pm Free First Thursdays!

Seattle is our place. We are constantly changing, moving as we do, growing as we build. True, the landscape is dotted with icons of our history; the Rainier R, the original Starbucks sign, the Lincoln Toe truck. But when you think of Seattle’s history, don’t just think about the past. Watch our future unfold. You are creating Seattle. Every word. Every idea. MOHAI is the epicenter of this growth. It’s the quintessential experience of what was built and where we’re going. MOHAI is a place to explore Seattle. As we grow, with all we create, speak, read, write and learn, history inspires more history. MOHAI is an inspiration of original thought, supported with hundreds of years of practice.

"The Museum of History & Industry MOHAI is a history museum in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, United States. It is the largest private heritage organization in Washington state, maintaining a collection of nearly four million artifacts, photographs, and archival materials primarily focusing on Seattle and the greater Puget Sound region.A portion of this collection roughly 2% at any given time is on display in the museum's galleries at the historic Naval Reserve Armory in Lake Union Park.MOHAI's highly facilitated, hands-on field trip programs use authentic historic materials to promote teamwork, creativity, communication, visual literacy, critical thinking, observation, and problem-solving skills."

Enjoyed learning about history on 2&4 floors. Not too crowded. The special exhibit with interactive Lego building was unique. There are range of engaging parts of exhibits & 3rd floor for kids. Cool views of lake Union from top windows.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo wait
This museum collects, preserves and highlights artifacts and stories from the Puget Sound region. There are 2 levels handicap accessible via elevators to walk through, many with interactive exhibits and videos to watch. There is a small gift shop, but no restaurant inside. We were visiting for New Years and there was not a huge crowd, seen by pictures *not super loud/sensory friendly. Definitely would recommend visiting if you are in the area!
The highlight for me was the top floor which feels like as if you are in the ship with a ship’s wheel that you can turn and ship binoculars from which you can see a zoomed up view of gasworks park. Also there’s windows that offer really great views of Lake Union. Great museum to visit when admission is free on first Thursdays of the month.
A great museum that showcases the history of Seattle and more. At first I thought it was empty as you walk in, but most of the displays are along the walls. Tip - the first Thursday of the month has free admissions between 5-8
It’s very interesting museum to learn the history of Seattle. Highly recommend visiting if you are new to the city. There are short videos in 2nd floor theaters and many artifacts.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

The MOHAI Museum is a great place for tourists, locals and just kids. Here you'll learn about Seattle and be inspired by the innovations that have changed the city. It took us about 2-3 hours to explore the entire museum.Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$21–30
A very pleasant experience after a day at the lake, they offer student discounts by showing your student ID. It's a fascinating and interactive museum, and it holds a lot of Seattle's history, so as a tourist or newcomer, it is indeed a great visit. They offer audio-visual presentations to complement the traditional stands, from Seattle's starts to modern-day industries and facts. The only thing they lack could be souvenirs, the ones available aren't really from the museum; they're more generic type souvenirs.
Love this place. Very well done displays, friendly staff and lots of open space to spread out or let the kids run a little bit. The history of Seattle and the northwest is very well documented with pictures and examples. When I was there they had a fantastic Ansel Adams special exhibit that was very well put together. The park area outside surrounding the museum as well as the lake and the center for wooden boats makes for a very enjoyable multi faceted visit.
I started to visit different museums only a few years ago. Before I didn't understand why people go to museums at all. I think it comes with particular age it's different for each person. You can explore Seattle’s story through exhibits and interactive experiences from Native Americans to uniquely Northwest Innovations. It's amazing.
