Museum of Newport History

Description

The Museum of Newport History is a history museum in the Old Brick Market building in the heart of Newport, Rhode Island, United States. It is owned and operated by the Newport Historical Society at 127 Thames Street on Washington Square. The building, designed by noted 18th-century American architect Peter Harrison and built in the 1760s, is a National Historic Landmark.DescriptionThe Brick Market is a three story brick structure with a low hip roof. Its ground floor has round-arch openings, which were historically open but have mostly been glassed over. The upper level bays are separated by large pilasters with Ionic capitals, with a dentillated cornice below the roof. The second floor windows are rectangular sash, topped by alternating gable and segmented-arch pedimemnts. The third floor windows are square, with a simpler molded surround. The interior has been extensively altered over time, with little historic material surviving.HistoryThe Brick Market was designed by Peter Harrison, a major architect working in the British colonies during the 18th century. Harrison based the Georgian design on a part of the 17th century design of Somerset House by Inigo Jones, altering the building material from stone to brick, and replacing Jones' Corinthian capitals with those of the Ionic order.

Lots of historical books and souvenirs from newport. We actually only visited the shop, the museum is upstairs and it costs $5. You can also book some walking tours there. We did the rum tour. Learned about how alcohol was treated during the last 300 years and had a rum cocktail at the end at the stoneacre Inn. It was interesting and the guide was very professional. We had a good time even though it rained on the day of the tour.
We visited this museum and gift shop with my husband while on a Newport getaway 3/1/23–3/3/23. What a wonderful place! So many fascinating exhibits and well worth the suggested donation. We had a great time there learning about the history of Newport. A must-see spot for anyone visiting the area. Thank you so much!
We took the historical walking tour and it was very informative. I would highly recommend if you are interested in the history of the area.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$16–20
We visited the museum and shop, and had so much fun. The museum isn’t big, but it is just a good size to spend there 45 minutes and learn more about Newport History. We enjoyed the video guides at the carriage.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5
Museum was closed but gift shop open. There was an eclectic assortment of items for sale. The attendant was very good at answering the couple of historical questions I had about Newport.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Our tour guide for the Rum & Revolution Tour used several outdated terms, and told the history of Newport through very whitewashed lens. She gave us a lot of basic information, but not many details when we asked for more details she just said she didn't know, I appreciate that she was honest about this instead of just trying to make something up. She didn't talk while walking, but would wait to talk until we arrived somewhere, so about half of the tour was in silence. At every stop she positioned her back to the sun, which meant everyone on the tour spent a lot of time staring into the sun, by the end I had a splitting headache from this. The information on the website about where to meet and where bathrooms were located wasn't accurate, which was frustrating when we were trying to get there. The parking lot suggested on the tour website cost $60, which is higher than DC parking! Definitely find your own parking instead of following their suggestions on the website. The website says to arrive 10 min early, or you will be left. This is untrue. We were the only ones to arrive early even the guide wasn't there 10 min early, and our tour left 15 min late.
Very busy area. Tiny musuem but thoughtfulness in the layout, items, and presentation. Parking nearby by $3/ half hour. Nice gift shop but a lot of books and higher end items.
Great shop. Museum was interesting and worth the $5 suggested donation. Loved the large book selection in the store and all the merchandise they have featuring the James Nicholson harbor view painting.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5
I didn’t do the museum, just explored the gift shop and it was so nice. Loved the way it was laid out and had a great selection. Found some really cool unique Christmas presents. Will have to try the museum next time I’m in town with more time.
