Museum of Science and Industry

Description

The Museum of Science and Industry is located in Chicago, Illinois, in Jackson Park, in the Hyde Park neighborhood between Lake Michigan and The University of Chicago. It is housed in the former Palace of Fine Arts from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Initially endowed by Julius Rosenwald, the Sears, Roebuck and Company president and philanthropist, it was supported by the Commercial Club of Chicago and opened in 1933 during the Century of Progress Exposition.Among the museum's exhibits are a full-size replica coal mine, captured during World War II, a 3500sqft model railroad, the first diesel-powered streamlined stainless-steel passenger train, and the Apollo 8 spacecraft that carried the first humans to orbit the Moon.Based on 2009 attendance, the Museum of Science and Industry was the second-largest cultural attraction in Chicago. David R. Mosena has been president and CEO of the museum since 1998.HistoryThe Palace of Fine Arts at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition was designed by Charles B. Atwood for D. H. Burnham & Co. Unlike the other "White City" buildings, it was constructed with a brick substructure under its plaster facade. After the World's Fair, it initially housed the Columbian Museum, which evolved into the Field Museum of Natural History. When the Field Museum moved to a new building near downtown Chicago in 1920, the former site was left vacant.

An amazing fun and educational museum. My favorite science museum anywhere. The exhibits are superbly designed and executed with so many hands on experiences for kids and adults alike. Space, health, transportation, aviation, weather and so much more. I love this place. The STEM fair today was awesome not only for kids but for this septuagenarian. U-505 -spelling in story and in experience, Pompeii exhibit- better than my visit to the real place. Food - very good, reasonably price, mostly good service with a couple of unfortunate surly servers.
We were on a trip to Chicago for something else and decided to check this out. We also paid extra for the U-505 tour. This is an excellent museum with tons of great exhibits. I'd say you can skip the farm tech section as we didn't find it very interesting and it's more geared towards kids, but the rest was fantastic. The U-505 tour is not for those with claustrophobia, but it's an incredible experience. Whether on your own or with kids, I highly recommend this museum.
Wonderful experience and must visit museum during your trip to Chicago. We went with 1.5 year toddler. He enjoyed every bit of the museum. For shows, we attended Blue paradox, Mirror maze and The Idea Factory. All 3 shows are free included in ticket price. But you need to register for each individual show for timed entry. We purchased tickets at the museum ticket counter on a Sunday morning. There is 15 min wait. Blue paradox: it’s a unique experience, definitely change the way how you see plastic usage after the show. Must visit even if it has ticket in future. Idea factory: My toddler enjoyed idea factory. Tons of things to do for kids here. Mirror maze: Definitely fun filled experience. Parking is plenty. It is $22 per day. They even have a decent cafe inside the museum. You can spend entire day here.
Absolutely a must see! Buy your tickets through Chicago City Pass, it's economical and allows you to cut the regular line. This is the museum for all ages. The exhibits are well organized and cleverly presented. They pull you in and keep your attention. People of all ages will enjoy the museum. I highly recommend the mining attraction for parents with older kids. Bring your lunch with you they have seating in the basement for families. Vending machines are also available.
Such a great place to visit! Museum is great for people of all ages and abilities! Super interactive exhibits that anyone can enjoy. This museum is massive so if you have the chance, definitely see something different each time you go. The food court is stellar with a bunch of options for everyone! Some exhibits have timed tickets so if you want to see any of those, book them in advance. Overall, such a fun and interactive place to visit!
We paid more to attend the special Pompeii Exhibit which was very well done. The Exhibition is in 2 parts with a timed entry but they let you in an hour in advance so they are not strict like a lot of museums. We thought the cost amount was well worth it. Expect to spend an entire day or 2 at the museum as there is so much to see, we took an hour for the Pompeii Exhibit. The live vibrating volcano eruption of Mt. Vesuvius was very realistic. The gladiator section was very cool as was the kitchen and utensils section. The brothel is well done and you are forewarned if you have children of the content. The rest of the museum is world class and renowned. Learned an incredible amount about modern farming with the John Deere harvester. We love this museum. Parking is easy and only $20 which is reasonable for Chicago. It is such a big museum that it’s hard to feel crowded. The lunch area was super clean and a wide variety of healthy foods.
The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago is an absolute treasure trove of knowledge, innovation, and wonder. I recently had the pleasure of visiting, and I can't say enough about the incredible experience it offers. First and foremost, the exhibits are nothing short of mind-blowing. From the moment you step inside, you're transported into a world of scientific discovery and exploration. The sheer diversity of topics covered is astonishing, from space exploration to cutting-edge technology, and from history to the natural world. There's something to captivate and inspire visitors of all ages. The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the "Science Storms" exhibit, where I got to witness the power of natural phenomena like tornadoes, lightning, and avalanches up close. It was both thrilling and educational, and I left with a newfound appreciation for the forces of nature. The museum also does an excellent job of making complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging. The interactive displays and hands-on activities are not only informative but also incredibly fun. Whether you're a child or an adult, you'll find yourself learning and having a blast at the same time. The "U-505 Submarine" exhibit is another must-see. It's a fascinating journey into the world of naval history, and the fact that you can step inside an actual World War II-era submarine is an experience like no other. The staff at the Museum of Science and Industry are knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and always ready to answer questions and engage in discussions about the exhibits. Their passion for science and education shines through, enhancing the overall experience. The museum's iconic location in the historic Palace of Fine Arts adds to its charm. The architecture itself is a work of art, and it provides a fitting backdrop for the incredible exhibits within. For families, this museum is a dream come true. It's not only educational but also incredibly entertaining, making it an ideal destination for a day of exploration and learning. In conclusion, the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago is a true gem. It's a place where science comes alive, where curiosity is rewarded, and where you can leave feeling inspired and informed. Whether you're a science enthusiast, a history buff, or just someone looking for a fantastic day out, this museum deserves every bit of its five-star rating. I can't wait to visit again and continue my journey of discovery!
If you are visiting Chicago and have enough time this is a great museum to visit, family friendly, ideal for curious kids. You can spend an entire day on it. For me the highlight was the U-boat, there are only 4 in display in the world, and this is the only one in the Americas. If you want to go inside the U-boat you have to buy a ticket to do a 25 min. tour $18 adults, in my opinion it's worth it. Also the blue paradox exhibition was very impressive by the display, this is a free exhibition. During weekdays it is usually very calm and you can enjoy the museum. Entry to the museum is $26 adults, but there are discounts for residents.
I recently visited the Chicago Science Museum, it's seriously cool! You can have an absolute blast there with all the hands-on stuff they have. It's not just for little ones, even grown-ups like me can have a ton of fun. What's really neat is how you can get hands-on with science. You can mess around with experiments, interactive displays, and it's all super enjoyable. And don't think it's just for the kiddos. I'm an adult, and I had an awesome time exploring and trying out different things. It's like being a kid again, but with all the wisdom of adulthood. If you happen to find yourself in Chicago, make it a point to stop by the Science Museum. Trust me, it's well worth your time! * Check out museum free date!
My favorite museum. I have been coming here since I was a kid. There are changing exhibits that you can visit so it's not the save every time. I really like seeing the U-505 it's amazing to see in person. It's just an amazing place to walk around. I recommend the Annual Fund Membership. You get access to many places all around and free tickets to the individual exhibits inside the museum.
