Museum of Western Film History

About

The mission of the Museum of Western Film History is to collect, preserve, protect, archive and exhibit a variety of original materials containing information of permanent historical value relating to the history and heritage of American Western Films.

Description

The Lone Pine Film History Museum celebrates and preserves the diverse movie history of Lone Pine, Death Valley and the Eastern Sierras. The private institution has over 10,000 square feet of exhibits, an eighty-five seat movie theater and gift shop that focuses on keeping alive the cultural heritage of America’s cinematic history through film programs, artifacts preservation and exhibits and events including two film festivals.

Exhibits at the museum reflect the museum’s extensive collections and include: early silent films, post war films, “eastern,” science fiction such as Tremors and Iron Man and the many cowboy heroes who worked locally including John Wayne, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers.

All of this was made possible by a generous gift from Beverly and Jim Rogers of Intermountain West Communications Company. Many items from Mr. Rogers’s personal collection are on display in the museum including the cars from Trail to San Antone and High Sierra. Other film treasures on exhibit include hats and guns of many western stars, costumes from The Shootist, and Errol Flynn’s coat from Kim. Also on exhibit are several silver saddles from Mr. Rogers, including Bolin and Jeff Flowers. The Museum is always looking for gifts of western movies artifacts and posters as well as items available for purchase.

All I can say is HOLY SMOKES! If you are a fan of westerns you have to come here! First I would visit Movie Road in the Alabama Hills. Drive around and check out the scenery. Very cool. Then visit the museum. When you watch their film you will recognize the hills from the movies. The museum is very well put together. All of the artifacts are top notch. A cool gift shop too.
Great place to visit if you're in this area! Super neat and very interesting to see all the movies filmed here and the equipment used back in the day. You can visit the gift shop for free, but there is a $5 donation required to tour the museum. There are membership packages available. They have a theater room where you can watch a short documentary.
Truly awesome walk through film history in the Lone Pine area. Fabulously curated with TONS of historical artifacts! It’s a $5 donation to get it but worth ten times that! If you visit Death Valley, you have to make a stop here. Plan at least 2-3 hours to take it all in.
Cool museum to stop by on our way to Mammoth. Entry Tickets were $5 a person. There is a 15 minute film you can watch that gives the history of filming there. The exhibit was extensive and enjoyable. Restroom facilities were clean.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5
So much to see! Amazing experience! It's almost overwhelming how many movies were shot in Lone Pine, even more recent movies. Always recommend it for those who love classic cowboy movies and film in general!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5

This place is awesome! My boyfriend IG:@mr.johnson_601 and I are big into western culture. We had no idea about this place! It's not just an old western museum, but also about modern movies that were filmed in that area, like Django. Please stop here if you can. Staff is friendly!Visited onWeekendWait time30–60 minPrice for adult entry$1–5
People were great. The setup and historic information was informative. Most of the movies were prior to my time. I only recognized a few later references to Iron Man and Star Trek.
Been driving up the 395 for over 10years and had never stopped at the Museum, boy was I missing out. Great museum and exhibitions. A must when going up or down the beautiful 395!
While I knew Lone Pine had a ton of movie history, I had no idea how deep it was until I visited this museum! This isn’t a huge place plan about 60-90 minutes but it is chock full of really interesting movie memorabilia and a theater showing highlights and history. It does feel slightly outdated and while there are a few sections with more recent flicks, the majority of it is from the traditional western era. They also have a decent gift shop and employees that are very nice and happy to answer any questions! Worth a stop for sure if you are in the area.
