This museum seeks to preserve and share the story, culture and lifestyles of the people living in the western part of York County, SC.
The Museum of Western York County was originally the site of a Rosenwald School built exclusively for African American children sometime around 1925/26. After desegregation in the late 1960s, the building continued to operate as a school—at times for both African American and White students—until a new school was built. Void of students, the building was gifted to the Town of Sharon around 1990.
In 2003, the Broad River Basin Historical Society created an agreement with Mayor Joe Cox and the Town Council to establish the Museum of Western York County with Mr. Jerry West as Director. Due to its success, a few years after opening, the Museum became a tax-free 501(c)3 entity. Since 2003, the Museum has grown from its first gallery, funded by Mr. and Mrs. C. Brook Hudson of Sharon, to include a total of eight galleries encompassing five thousand square feet of exhibits.
