Natural Bridge State Park (Massachusetts)

Description

Natural Bridge State Park is a Massachusetts state park located in the city of North Adams in the northwestern part of the state. The park's chief feature, for which it is named, is the only natural white marble arch/bridge in North America. Visitors can also view the remains of an abandoned marble quarry.HistoryThe bedrock marble from which the natural bridge was created is estimated to be some 550 million years old. Water from glacial runoff began carving the arch after the last Ice Age, 13,000 years ago.The site of a marble quarry from 1810 to 1947 and a privately owned tourist attraction from 1950 to 1983, the site became a state park in 1985. The arch and associated quarry have long attracted attention from hikers, including author Nathaniel Hawthorne who visited in 1838.Hudson BrookThe Mohawk Indians that lived, hunted, and fished in the area possibly saw no gain in naming the small brook, but when an explorer for the Massachusetts fort stumbled upon the many caves and rock formations he took it upon himself to aptly name Hudson Brook; forever paying homage to himself. Lieutenant Seth Hudson was stationed at Fort Massachusetts in 1759 and discovered what is today known as Hudson Brook around 1760 when he relocated out to the Western Massachusetts/Vermont border. Hudson was later one of the founders of the southern Vermont town of Pownal.Hudson Brook is responsible for many of the marble formations that can be seen at the Natural Bridge. The brook cascades down a marble maze and eventually makes its way through a cave known as Hudson Cave. This natural wonder was one of several locations in the Berkshires noted in the journal of Nathaniel Hawthorn which was eventually published under the title The American Note-books.

"Natural Bridge State Park is home to the only natural white marble arch in North America. According to geologists, the park's namesake natural bridge, made of 550 million year-old bedrock marble, was carved into its iconic arch by the forces of glacial melt water over 13,000 years ago. Today, the bridge spans the bubbling Hudson Brook as it twists and tumbles through a steep 60-foot gorge - one of the best demonstrations of glacial erosion in New England."

Natural Bridge in North Adams is a must see area for nature lovers! The rocks are made of marble and the canyon itself is very cool! There is also a waterfall there that is worth checking out! Don't forget to go into the DCR building! There is a cool little museum with cool artifacts!
I've lived here in the Berkshires my entire life and have passed by the signs for this park many times and had never stopped there until a recent afternoon. I was awestruck by the marble walls of the Cliffsides as you enter the park. Beautiful streams and waterfalls too!!! Once up top there were picnic tables and a visitor center The park was dog friendly and they seemed to enjoy taking a dip in the pond.. you could see a nice pathway that must take one to the actual Natural Bridge. I cannot wait to actually be able to walk the path on my next visit..I can imagine the beauty one must see... after im able to complete that I'm sure I will give this park 5 stars!!
The park has not been maintained, it seems... which is sad. The trails need some TLC. It's very beautiful with natural marble. A short hike/walk here... bathrooms are closed... Dog-friendliness: Leashed dogs... and remember to pick up after your dog.
Well maintained park. Easily accessible by car to the main viewpoints. Small visitor center. Restrooms: At visitor center
Had some time to kill so my wife and I took a nice walk. It was off season so some of the walkways were closed off. We will have to return later this year.
We really enjoyed this hike. We were looking for a kid friendly accessible trail. This park is not completely handicap accessible, but it was accessible enough for our needs. It was a fairly short walk with interesting views to keep the kids interested. Restrooms: There are restrooms in the visitors center.
I was disappointed about part of the trail being closed. After reading some of the comments about people complaining about the cost. I am not complaining. There was no charge when i went today. It was a nice little walk. Since the main trail was closed i walked the road side to the bottom instead. Got some nice pictures.
Very scenic place. Setting is idyllic. It's nice to look at the old marble quarry. The natural bridge itself isn't very large, but it is still pretty cool. The marble dam is also unique. Unfortunately, many of the viewing platforms were blocked off. Hopefully, they are able to open these soon. Sculpture gardens is one of a kind. Visitor center gives good info on the history of the marble quarry. They do have some nature trails in the surrounding woods as well which are also pretty nice.
if you're close by, it's worth a visit, but it doesn't justify a long journey.
Well this was a disappointing trip. I went there really wanting to see the natural bridge, and drove over an hour, to find out that it was not open to viewing. Not sure what's wrong, but the path has been blocked for at least 6 months, probably more. The drive up was pretty cool with the big rocks up 1 side and there's a pretty cool old marble dam at the top. There's a nature trail that runs a little over a mile 1 way. Also the old mill is at the bottom of the driveway. There's an art area with sculptures from high school kids from early 2000s. There are clean bathrooms at the visitor center at the top also. Maybe I'll be back 1 day to see the bridge and up my rating.
