Amazing dim sum! Great service and delicious food! Very authentic
Their dim sum are extremely salty and/or high in MSG. I felt so thirsty with high pressure headache after eating them. Not a good place to take your elderly parents with blood pressure issue. 3 star for good customer service.
I have so many great memories at this restaurant. In my childhood I would get to choose where we ate on my birthday and I would always choose New Canton for the dim sum. It is a real shame that the restaurant does not appear to be open anymore. Sure there are other dim sum restaurants but I've never liked one as much as New Canton. I'm not sure why it has closed but I hope it will open again in the future.
If you don't go during peak hours the service is attentive. But also if you don't go during peak hours there's less variety of carts going around. The usual and popular pieces always go around regardless of the time, though. Quality and taste seems to have declined over the years but the food is still good. The ladies that push around the carts are pretty accommodating to English speakers. Sometimes they can tell you what the item is exactly and other times they'll let you peek at the dishes. Parking in the lot is difficult but there's another lot across the street I've seen people use.
Very good Cantonese seafood. Ignore their American-Chinese dishes and concentrate on the Chinese specialties - fish, shellfish, duck and pork. Pleasant service, a wonderful manager who goes out of his way to make sure everyone is having a good meal. I've never had a bad time here. Great for big groups. Also, coincidentally - or not - the best dim sum north of the Bay Area, as long as you get there before 11 and sit upstairs. --- update 4.25.08 I go to New Canton once a month or so for dim sum.. maybe once every 2 months. Maybe 1x a year for dinner. However, with their recent buyout & redo of New Lai Wah, they've redone the menu at both places both have almost the same menu now. I got takeout last night - and was really impressed with the DOZENS of new regional specialties and other, less orthodox dishes that are now on the menu. $50 for 2 peoples worth of food was a bit much - the prices are higher now too - and when they were out of something they told me they were going to substitute, but didn't credit me for the $5 less that the substitution was priced at. Other than that, though, VERY good. Definitely good seafood; the noodles-with-leeks that Kate Washington liked so much in last week's review of Lai Wah were a little meh - no sauce, no spice, very bland but good texture - but I was impressed with the freshness, portion size and speed for a takeout order. All in all, I wish they were adding some of these dishes to the dim sum menu - or just adding more to dim sum generally, as I've tried everything on the DS menu and would like something new there. Good stuff though.
OMG the BBQ puff pastry is to die for. Dimsum is very good too, and the boss was definitely on top of things! Too bad I don't live in Sacramento : also, it was open on 4th of July, when all the other places were closed! So you can probably trust that they would be open on other holidays too!
Wow. It has been a long time since I gave a 1 star review... Pros: food was good but... Cons: Customer service was beyond horrible. No water or anything to drink until we were getting ready to leave. The waitress was rude and I saw what looked like a manager come out and direct the wait staff to fawn over a older European family while me and my kids were thirsty with no utensils. I had to get up and ask for a fork for my toddlers. I will NEVER go back to New Canton Restaurant.
Had a pretty bad experience here. Food was mediocre, service was atrocious. Was told they didn't have any metal utensils so we got plastic ones. Multiple other families got metal utensils around us so I guess we were special. They never refilled our water once, which is fine because it was tap water without ice anyway. Still looking for a decent chinese place in sac.... wouldn't recommend this one.
If you want a unique and delicious experience - hit up New Canton on a Sunday morning. You'll be able to sample all sorts of interesting and tasty dishes from BBQ pork buns, to crispy shrimp balls that look like bird's nests to slimy cold chicken feet. Whatever floats your boat. Also, really affordable.
It used to be good, but not any more. It is disappointing today. The lobster noodle is less than half size as before, and the lobster is definitely not fresh.
