Hands down the best Chinese food in downtown new haven I wouldn't compare it to other cities, just new haven . I would say the authenticity of the food in this restaurant is ~70% which is pretty high compared to other Chinese restaurants over this area which is not even close. Whenever I am craving for Chinese food, I would definitely get some from this place. Though the price of food at this place is significantly higher than other Chinese restaurants around this area, I feel that it is worth it to pay that extra few dollars for better quality and taste.
Had a quick lunch here during the weekend. It was very well decorated with oriental theme. It was spacious inside. We ordered spicy beef noodle soup, pepper and pork stir fried rice and the very typical Sichuan dish- Fu Chi Fei Pian. They all came out very delicious and flavorful. The beef noodle soup was not on its menu. But I knew a restaurant specialized in Sichuan cuisine would normally have it so I asked. Sure they did! It was very spicy but tasted exactly as I had in China. And there were lots of tender tasty beef meat. I was super happy about the food. Will definitely come back.
I gave the restaurant a 2 star rating, not because of the food but because we were placed in the very back of the restaurant and had place settings that included "to go" wood and plastic, cheap looking water glasses and ceramic plates. The food was good but very slow and I am not sure why we were placed in such an isolated area. I did not request a private area. No other customers were placed back there and in the front of the restaurant the tables were not set with glassware, flatware and plates that did not match. Those tables exhibited the elegance and quality I was lead to believe was part of the restaurant's reputation. I don't believe there was a problem of room in the front, considering tables were empty and none of the other people waiting to be seated ended up in the back of the restaurant. The reservation was made 24 hours before. I would appreciate an explanation.
Taste AMAZING! After trying tons of Szechuan food in NYC, this restaurant surprised us a lot. We are actually just pass by the restaurant and so glad we had meal here. My partner said it’s the best Szechuan food ever tried in states. And she’s a Szechuaness and born to eat spicy foods. If the food is good enough, sometime we don’t even care about the service. This is for those one or two stars reviews. I’d high recommend this restaurant to whoever want to try authentic Szechuan food.
We had a wonderful lunch here. There was an extensive choice of both vegan and non-vegan options, and there were many unique dishes that we were excited to try. Food was excellent, with the twice cooked pork vegan and dry tofu with peanuts being particular standouts. Service was prompt, polished, and helpful. Highly recommend this place!
We thought it was the most authentic Chinese food we have had and close to being in China. We ordered the steamed pork dumplings and sautéed chicken with 5 pepper blend. We could see and taste the pork in the dumpling and the dough was thin. The portion was perfect for two people. The chicken was full of chili peppers, ginger, and different spices including numbing pepper. The menu includes numerous dishes including tripe and we don’t usually see that on menus. The down side was it too a very long time to be seated and the restaurant was too hot. They were very short staffed I think. Reasonable prices.
The main dining area has a nice atmosphere, especially with holiday poinsettias and spruce decorations. All of the dishes that were passing us by while we were waiting looked incredible. Also, when we started eating the food tasted delicious, but there is still more to this story. Most of the dishes were ordered without salt for personal health reasons while the rest were done normally, which was for me. Initially, I liked the taste of the food. The seafood tofu soup was outstanding! The seasonal vegetables baby bokchoy and seafood fried rice all were satisfying. Then I started to feel the excessive salt headache and knew it was too much. I tried the other dishes that had no salt but they were bland; by no fault of the restaurant. In the end, I thought this was a 4-star place but the excessive amount of salt or maybe it was MSG brought it down a notch. Now, please understand we also ate at Peter Chang's in Stamford 3-days prior and the food was incredible without the excessive use of salt. I would rate that 4-4.5-stars since they offered much more vegetarian dishes that all tasted great.
So-so service! So-so food! Not worth the price- especially the cod with pickled vegetable soup try this dish somewhere else. Salt and pepper calamari good. Pork dumplings so-so, the presentation was not good, YongChow fried rice ok.
Pretty solid Chinese food- standard options. For vegetarian, try the cabbage with Sichuan pepper, and the tofu. Scallion pancake was very tasty. Water glasses stayed filled which was nice.Food: 4/5
The Yangchow fried rice and beef stir fry was fantastic +delicious! The Chilli oil was scandalous with a hint of aromatics it was a happy warm flavor so pleasant!
