Department Facts
The City of Newark is located in the southeastern end of the San Francisco Bay and is bordered by the City of Fremont and the bay. The Newark Police Department serves approximately 44,000 residents and a land area of approximately 13 square miles. The police department’s budget for Fiscal Year 2015-2016 is $15,917,300 and includes a staff of one Chief, two Commanders, two Lieutenant, eight Sergeants, 43 Police Officers, and 21 non-sworn (civilian) full-time positions.

There are two divisions within the police department: Administrative Services and Field Operations. Overall supervision of each division is the responsibility of a Commander. The Administrative Services Division is responsible for areas such as Records, Communications, Detectives, Property and Evidence, Internal Affairs, and Personnel and Training. Field Operations includes Patrol, K9, Traffic, Animal Control, and Vehicle Abatement. In addition it also oversees the Special Enforcement Team, School Resource Officer, Major Crimes Task Force members, Honor Guard, SWAT and Hostage Negotiation, and Emergency Preparedness.

Volunteer staff includes our RAVENS (Ready Active Volunteers Engaged in Newark) who assist in Traffic, Patrol, and Records; Explorers/Cadets who are young people aged 14-24 interested in law enforcement; Graffiti Abatement volunteers who dedicate their time to keep Newark blight-free; and Reserve Police Officers who supplement our sworn staffing levels.
