Nexium and Prilosec Products Linked to Kidney Disease and Kidney Failure.
Acid reflux products such as Nexium and Prilosec are commonly used over-the-counter drugs that are believed to be of low risk for side effects. These drugs are some of the most widely used brands in the United States.
Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) such as these work by reducing acid in the stomach and are effective in treating symptoms associated with acid reflux, which can lead to heartburn and/or oesophagitis, and ulcers.
There has been growing concern about the risk of kidney problems from acid reflux drugs and new research has provided evidence that the use of PPI’s may be linked to chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney failure.

Studies Point to the Risk of Kidney Injury, Kidney Disease and Kidney Failure
The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology has published a study in which researchers working with the Veterans Affairs Clinical Epidemiology Center and other local universities compared kidney risks from PPI’s to a different class of heartburn drugs, H2 blockers, or histamine H2-receptor antagonists. They examined data from 173,321 people who took PPI medications compared to 20,270 people who took H2 blockers such as Zantac, Pepcid, Tagamet, Tazac and Axid. The groups were followed for five years to ascertain renal outcomes and it was found that people who used PPI’s such as Nexium and Prilosec may be 96% more likely to develop kidney failure and 28% more likely to develop chronic kidney disease.

Over this five year period, 15% of PPI users developed chronic kidney disease. Researchers also found an association suggesting that the longer someone uses the medication, the greater the risk of kidney problems. As these products are now available over-the-counter and many people take these medications for long periods of time, the number of kidney problems may be unknown at this time and therefore substantially underreported.
FDA Requires Warning Label Changes
PPI drugs are known to carry the risk of acute interstitial nephritis and acute kidney injury, but the risk of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure has been unknown. In December of 2014, the FDA required warning label changes for Nexium, Prilosec and other PPI’s, to add information about the risk of acute interstitial nephritis, which involves inflammation possibly leading to kidney injury or failure if not treated promptly.
In early 2015, JAMA Internal Medicine published a study finding an increased risk of chronic kidney disease with PPI use and possibly a 50% higher risk of kidney disease compared to non-users.
In April, 2015, the medical journal CMAJ Open published a study finding the side effects of PPI drugs may carry a risk of acute kidney injury, which involves the loss of kidney function.
Profit Before Consumer Safety?
Lawsuits throughout the United States allege that these potential life-threatening injuries may have been avoided if only the manufacturers had warned individuals taking the medications about the risks of acute kidney injury, chronic kidney injury and kidney failure.
