Numerous studies, dating back to 1971, have found that the use of Talc based products can increase the risk of Ovarian cancer by roughly 30 percent. Recently, a 2013 study published in Cancer Prevention Research suggests that the use of talcum powder in the genital area by women leads to a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer. In that particular study, the data on 2,000 women showed that those who use talc body powder in their genital areas may have a 20-30 percent higher risk of developing ovarian cancer than women who do not use talc powder.
Researchers have found that when Talc based products are used by females around the genital area, the Talc can travel to the ovaries and become trapped in the ovarian tissue. This can cause inflammation which over time may lead to the growth of cancerous tumors.
LAW SUITS AGAINST JOHNSON & JOHNSON ALLEGE A FAILURE TO WARN OF CANCER RISK
Johnson & Johnson a leading manufacturer of Talc based products has been sued several times for a failure to warn about these risks. In fact, in 2013 a jury in South Dakota found that Johnson and Johnson did not properly investigate the causal link between Talc and Ovarian Cancer and failed to warn consumers about the risk of cancer from their products. In this case, the plaintiff presented evidence that Johnson & Johnson has known about the potential risk of Ovarian Cancer from their products since 1982.
Multiple class actions have also been filed against Johnson & Johnson regarding their failure to warn about increased cancer risks. These lawsuits however, do not seek compensation for individual injuries.
