Nine Mile Volunteer Fire Company was founded in May of 1984 when people of the community met at the Shady Vale Church to discuss forming a fire department. By the end of the nights meeting officers had been elected and it was official there would be a fire department in Nine Mile.
As time progressed a ton truck was donated by a farmer, and was turned into the first fire truck. In July of 1985 a fundraiser was held and things took off. Mr George Cooke Jr. arranged for Blauvelt NY. Volunteer Fire Department to donate a Maxxum fire truck and members drove to NY to get it. On June 19, 1986 Bylaws were written and became effective.
Since that time many things have changed, the ton truck was sold and a Tanker was purchased, then in 2007 the Maxxum was sold and the new Freightliner/ E-one was purchased.
The company is funded by two Bluegrass festivale every year the second weekend in May, and the third weekend in September.
