North Franklin Mountain

Description

North Franklin Mountain is a mountain in the Franklin Mountains of El Paso, Texas, located in the Southwestern United States. North Franklin, at 7192ft, is the highest point in El Paso, and the 27th-highest mountain in the state of Texas. Surrounded by a state park and with a maintained trail leading to its summit, the mountain is a popular hiking destination.North Franklin is located entirely within the city of El Paso, approximately 10mi east of the Texas–New Mexico border and 15mi north of the U.S.–Mexico border. The mountain is the highest of the Franklins, clipping nearby Anthony's Nose by just over 200ft and neighboring South Franklin by nearly 300ft. North Franklin rises 3300ft above both its western base in the Mesilla Valley and its eastern base in the Hueco Bolson. In spite of its name, North Franklin is actually in the central Franklins, being the northernmost of the range's two key peaks . To the south of these, the South Franklins include the peaks Mount Franklin and Ranger Peak .Like most of the Franklins, North Franklin Mountain is visible from many miles away. When observed from the east or west, North Franklin is shaped like a scalene triangle, with its long side facing its dome-shaped sister peak South Franklin Mountain. This quality makes it a valuable navigation point when traversing the desert areas around El Paso.GeologyThe Franklin Mountains are tilted-block fault mountains composed of sedimentary rocks, some of which date back to Precambrian times and are among the oldest in Texas. The mountains represent the southernmost tip of the Rocky Mountains in the U.S., and like the Rockies, were formed 60–70 million years ago during the Laramide orogeny. The Precambrian rocks atop North Franklin Mountain represent "the highest geological structure in the state of Texas."

Amazing climb, it took us 5 hours to go up and down the mountain, the views are amazing, you can see the entire borderplex. The date I went was the end of January 2022 and I hope to go this coming month when the rainy season begins. I highly recommend this place. The trial that I took was call north Franklin mountain peak highest point of the Franklin mountains.
A very challenging hike. The park rangers say the hike takes around 4-6 hours. We took around 6.5 hours round trip and were completely exhausted as we did not take multiple breaks. It’s best enjoyed when you have 8 hours to complete this hike. Remember the park gates lock at 5pm and you definitely don’t want to be locked inside. Going down is much easier than going up. The hike was challenging with great views. Reminded us of our hike up to Guadalupe peak. The biggest difference was the abundance of stones we had to walk on. Walking on those stone was not fun. You definitely need a good pair of hiking shoes for this trail and plenty of water minimum 3 liters per person. At the end of the trail, your entire body will be hurting but the views at the top are very rewarding!
If you ever find yourself in the area do yourself a favor and take the trip. The last leg of the hike is somewhat physically demanding. Do yourself a favor wear boots and hydrate the day before. Bring water with you. I would plan about 3.5 to 4 hours round trip in walking alone.
Crazy hike up, the state park service has made nice wide paths up. But they littered them with chunks of rocks they will destroy your ankles to keep them from washing out and turning into a mud bog. The Views up top are first rate. You can see El Capitan to the east and White Sands to the north on a clear day.
Beautiful experience loved it. Take water!!!
Strenuous hike to the top. We started very early in the day . About 6 hours round trip. Very beautiful views of the park from the top.
A definite recommend, this place is the highest peak in the city and overlooks into Mexico to the South and New Mexico to the North...the ways to get there are various and strenuous but if you're up for the challenge, don't be afraid!
Beautiful mountains. I hiked to the top of the mountain last fall. It is quite strenuous but well worth it. The views from up there are incredible.
That mountain is absolutely amazing and strangely enough I grew up in El Paso and I climb those mountains with my parents and to mountain when I was 5 years old The greatest adventure of my life and I remember it like it was yesterday and I had so much fun doing it if you ever get a chance to do something like that in your lifetime take it because you'll never forget it.
Took me 5.5 hours round trip lot’s of zigzags I’ve hiked it 3 times already and it’s very tiring
