Northeast High had its ups and downs. Speaking as a student from the Magnet program, I loved all the teachers and that I had. I feel my learning experience was equal to or even better than some other special admissions programs in the city. However, I didn't have a great experience with the staff. It was very unpleasant having to wear the heavy uniform in the hot building, without exception. Rather than focusing on student comfort, they seemed more focused on uniform policy. Students organized a protest of certain changes to the uniform my senior year in the form of a walkout, and the staff immediately shut it down and threatened to ban students from extracurriculars, sports, and our graduation ceremony. Rather than allowing the students to express themselves, they slammed free speech and threatened students. This led fellow students to feel oppressed and dislike the school more. I disagree with how they run things, but hey, I was just a student myself. I did love the school and what they've done for me, the connections I've made, but it was sad to see students could not advocate for themselves as they'd like.
Horrible school, all they care about is uniforms and Ties, nothing about education, Thank God my daughter is graduating today, her experience has been the worst. She started there thinking she would be in AVID and every year they ignored her request every single time. She has suspensions for not wearing a tie, for holding her jacket on her arm and for checking the time on her phone smh like really people don't the staff have better things to do like TEACH????. My daughter had substitutes all four years!!! I recommend not sending your child her
Kinda ok but the uniform policy is a mess... you'll get suspended for not wearing a tie.. The teacher is in the middle of teaching and they interrupt the classes just to remind you "be in full inform wear your ties... Or u gonna get suspended" its annoying
With some of the greatest teachers I've had retiring/ getting laid off, Northeast has lost a shell of it's former glory. Northeast has a wonderful magnet program which has wonderful math and sciences classes. I also would encourage joining clubs at northeast . IT's like a family with all the teamwork and dedicating you put into it and its passionate, regardless if you can or not do work you should join
The staff doesn't care. The only time they care about something is when there's a fight, which is every week. Ms. Denaples, stops people in the hallways if they don't like the way they have their uniform worn. Even if it's correct, she'll stop you. She tells her students that "nobody is giving you to buy anything" mostly ties but before you know it, she charges a student for money they don't have and expects them to pay for it. If you forget your tie in a locker and she stops you "you need to buy a new tie" no returns accepted. DISGRACE
Everyday I regret sending my daughter to this school. Way back in the day when I was in high school, Northeast was in the top 5 best schools in the city. Not just the Magnet Program but the school as a whole. I get no communication from the school or any of the teachers. Trying to reach any of the counselors or office staff is next to impossible. Constant rotation of substitutes in key classes English and Mathwho teach nothing. I understand that its a challenge to reach this generation. But there has to be some kind of drive and commitment. I feel like I cheated my child sending her to NEHS.
i hated this school. the uniform policy was ridiculous, some of the staff would pick out students that they didnt like with the incorrect uniform but would leave the kids that they know, alone. During graduation practice they announced the students who werent graduating which was really embarassing.
I think this statement of "best high school" needs to be re-visited. There is a video of an assault on one of your alumni Mia DeJesus who was attacked by 4 girls in your school January 27, 2016. The parents brought this to the attention of the Principal and staff, the video along with surveillance video within the school has been seen and clearly shows 4 girls following Mia into the bathroom. After the attack Mia told the appropriate staff and was told nothin can be done due to lack of evidence??! How is that even possible. This is NOT ok. There are children who commit suicide over bullying, at this point the way the child was beaten this isn't bullying this is assault a crime committed on school grounds and nothing is being done about it. When parents bring their children to school your job as administrators is to ensure a safe and healthy environment at all costs. What is being demonstrated here is lack of empathy and guess what? This isnt going to go away. The family of this child will find justice somehow even if it takes them hiring a lawyer and going to the Board of Education about this. No child should be scared to go to school to learn. You have failed in many ways and you must right this wrong. Stop condoning bullying for "lack of evidence " there is enough evidence and you know what? Call each one of the accused assaulters into the office and question them on by one. I BET YOU they'll sing like canaries and you'll have all the evidence you need. Children need to be taught whats right and whats wrong. People make mistakes but the biggest lesson they need to learn is never follow always be a leader. By following others you get in trouble and for every action there is something called REACTION. Prepare to reap what you sow! #justiceformia
I dont know why all of you people that think that this school is great. Central is better than this school as well as special admission schools in philly. And all of you hipsters that are living in the 1970s and still think that this school is great... well WAKE UP where have you been the past decades. Northeast is no longer a good school. DONACDUM
As a student of 3 years at northeast, i have to say that if it were not for the magnet, IB and SPARC program at the school i would have never attended. The regular school is filled with the majority of the students who are ignorant, rude and unethical. But thankfully those who attend the magnet program this is a seperate admission school/program meant for students who excel academically are located within the basement and the IB students are given a section of the first floor hallway to themselves so it is set up to maintain balance in the school. I highly recommend parents who are well concerned for their children's education to take into consideration of the Magnet school, IB and SPARC programs within the school. they will surely aid your child to continue their academic priorities futher into their high school and even when they go onto college or a university.
