About

Northville Fire Department and Northville Firemans Association. Located in upstate New York

Description

During the late 1880's, after several disastrous fires and no adequate fire protection, insurance rates went up and in some cases insurance companies would refuse to insure residents until there was some kind of fire protection in place. The initial step was the building of the Northville Resivoir and the water system for the village. On November 19,1891 a group of concerned citizens met in the offices of Attorney James Van Ness where they developed the first fire protection organization in Northvilles history: The Citizens Hose Company No. 1. After their development, the Citizens Hose Company purchased their first piece of equipment, a two wheeled, hand drawn hose cart from The City of Gloversville. The first fire call the company responded to was the Poole Drug Store on Main Street. When the need for more equipment was felt, horse drawn hook and ladder truck was purchased from Gloversville for $150. The village bought their first piece of motorized equipment, a 1927 Sanford Pumper. This was retired in 1959. Church bells sounded the alarm for a fire until 1907 when a 900 pound bell was installed atop the Cole Buidling. The cost of the bell was $120. The bell was retired in 1923 and replaced by electronic sirens much like the one presently in use. In 1942 a fire protection agreement was instituted to provide fire protection for the Town of Northamton. The town of Northampton signed the agreement with the Village of Northville which is still in effect today. The Firemans Association bought land in 1945, this was to become the sight of the new fire house built by the Northville Firemans Association in 1958. A small one story, 3 bay concrete block building was originally built. In 1973 the first floor was expanded with two double drive thru bays. Approximately 1980 a a second story was added containing a large community room and kitchen for social functions. The Northviille Fire Department has since become more advanced thru training and newer equipment. The fire department is a fully volunteer fire department with 5 trucks, over 30 active members, and a strong commitment to their community and neighbors. The fire department respondes to any and all emergencies, be it a fire, motor vehicle accident, person fallen thru the ice, and service calls such as power lines down and pumping cellars. Through out the years the Departmet has maintained a very efficient and professional manor which holds the best insurance rating possible without being a full time paid department
