This is definitely a local hotspot as the place was full of patrons, the walk-in counter was busy, and the drive thru had many cars in line. I know my opinion of their bbq is different than most others according to how busy it was and by the other reviews, but our experience wasn't great. As far as atmosphere, upon walking up, one can smell smoke from the pit, it was busy and was out dated, which I don't mind if the food and service was outstanding, but that wasn't the case. Our server was extremely nice and was definitely a people person, but was really forgetful as we had to ask several times for drinks or other items. We would ask and then she would become busy and forget. Now to the food. I am pretty familiar with most types of bbq and how they fit into each of their genres, but Owensboro bbq, definitely has its own twist. The bbq is all served wet, which sometimes hides the dryness or over cooking of the meat. The rub seemed to have an overpowering chili/paprika/pepper taste. I couldn't identify any sweetness or vinegar in it. They had 3 sauces and in my opinion, none of them were very good. They had an original which was very peppery and thin, so thin that when you tilt the old style ketchup/condiment container, it will spray all over the table all sauces were this way. The sweet heat sauce tasted as if the OG was used as a mother sauce and then a sweetness was added and something used for heat, my guess is cayenne. They have a newer bourbon sauce which again seems as if the OG was the mother sauce and they added bourbon. We did not like any of them. We ordered the sampler plates so we could try many of their meats and none of them were good. The chopped meats looked as if they were ran through a meat grinder and were served wet with the OG sauce. The texture was off-putting and the sauce is not good. The sliced pork was wet and was very dry. It was hard to taste the smoke flavor. The cook on the ribs were tender, but resembled a rib that would be baked and not something from a pit. The chicken was the better of the options, we had dark and white. The dar was ok, although the rub ruined it, but the white was very dry. The turkey was tender, but tasted as if it was a Swanson's sliced turkey, no smoke flavor and was covered in OG sauce. If you are accustomed to the traditional 4-5 typical styles of bbq, beware because this style is different. I don't mind different, because bbq has adapted and evolved for many years, but as much as I tried, I couldn't find a liking for it, too many technical errors in the cook, and flavor profiles of the rub and sauces were not of my liking.
08/07/2022 Ooooohh my what a wonderful place all of the Bar-B-Q was delicious and the mac and cheese and taters and gravy was excellent. It was our first time their but it won't be our last Our waitress was awesome she done a excellent job also. A+A+A+ Parking: Lots of room to park.
Visited family in Rockport, IN and we all decided we wanted some good BBQ. They had taken us to Moonlite before so they decided they wanted to show us another favorite spot - Old Hickory Bar-B-Que. I got the brisket with mac and cheese and onion rings. The brisket was really tasty. It had a more vinegar-heavy flavor than I’m used to but the smoke ring was beautiful and it was tender. The mac and cheese was creamy and the onion rings were crispy. I really enjoyed everything, and our server was on top of things the whole time. Would definitely recommend stopping by if you’re in the area.
We were looking for a good place to get some barbecue and found Old Hickory online. This will be my go-to place every time I travel home and need some good barbecue and dessert. The mutton was cooked to perfection, fork-tender, and seasoned just right. The potato salad was really good. Pecan pie and blackberry cobbler...yummy. If you haven't tried them, try them! The bathroom was well maintained also. Don't forget to get some takeout! I wish I had! Vegetarian options: There is an array of sides you can order.
This place was recommended by a local and we were looking forward to "the best bbq in the world" as it was billed. It was horrible. We order a combo.platter to share and picked chopped mutton, chopped pork and chicken. The chopped meats were pureed, not cut up with a knife. Pureed to baby food mush consistency. It was over cooked, over sauced and over seasoned. I'll stick to Virginia and North Carolina chopped bbq that has some texture at least. The service was good and we made sure to tip our waitress well - it's not her fault the food was so bad.
I had a catering order that I had to cancel because of inclement weather less than 2 hours before pick up time. OH was gracious enough to hold onto the food and let me pick it up the next night for our rescheduled event. We had green beans and Mac & cheese….both were delicious. Keith manager was great and easy to work with.Food: 5/5
Heard about this establishment from a friend. Was not impressed with the chopped mutton because its consistency was like potted meat. Bought mutton ribs also, and they were dry and hard. The sliced mutton was good, moist, and tender. Their sauces were more on the acidic side of the palet range with sort of an A-1 steak sauce taste. Since I was traveling this area of the country and I haven't eaten mutton in over 40 years so I thought I'd give it a try. The restaurant itself was fabulous. Well decorated, clean, and comfortable.
I got the trio plater with Brisket, Pork ribs and Mutton. Out of all the 3, my favorite was the Mutton. The Brisket was dry. Like so dry. Sides, we're okay nothing special. Dessert was amazing I got the cobbler. Service was so nice, I am well pleased. Will I go back... probably not. I've had better BBQ someplace else.
Tried the Chopped Mutton Sandwich and Brisket. I was most impressed with the brisket because it wasn't covered up with sauce. I could taste the smoke, wood, and seasoning in every bite. This made me feel I was eating good barbecue that must have been cooked low and slow to impart such flavors without being overladen with BBQ sauce.
In town for a convention, and was going to go to another BBQ place, but it was closed. Went to Old Hickory based on reviews. I guess my expectation was too great. I ordered the ribs, they tasted as they had been sitting a while and were very vinegary. I asked for a sweet sauce and it was very watery and still had a lot of vinegar in it. I got 2 sides, potato salad and coleslaw. They were nothing great about either. Coleslaw was watery and and warm. Spouse ordered the 3 meat combo mutton, chicken and pork plus mac & Cheese and baked beans. The chicken was dry and the mutton and pork was over powered by vinegar again. Beans were cold and Mac & cheese was not smoked. Price rather expensive at $21 a piece for meal and a soda. Passed on any dessert. While food wasn't up to expectations. Staff was great. If I ever get back to Owensboro, will go somewhere else for BBQ.
