From the moment we walked in, it was a great experience. We were wondering where the tasting room was so much like Prohibition! This small family operated distillery has ambience and character. Andrew does the distilling. Everything phenomenal- smooth and delicious. We had such a great time and enjoyed their spirits so much I had to buy Old Soldier Butterscotch flavored whiskey and Santos Bourbon. Old Soldier distillery is well worth the visit and it’s one of Tacoma’s well hidden secrets.
Two words. TOP. SHELF. Owned and operated exclusively by veterans, hence the name. From the friendliness of the owner and staff, to the tour details and Q&A answers to the pure heart they have in preserving a 2 generation old recipe/tradition, this little hole in the wall is a diamond worth seeking out. You will not be disappointed. Come for a tour, snag a bottle and super cool bottle cap/stopper trust menon this. You'll know when you see them, enjoy a tasting and some great company. *pro tip, make your next stop either the fish peddler or cooks Tavern restaurant *
This was a fantastic experience. Got a Groupon taster deal thinking, what the heck?.. was not expecting the wealth of knowledge, dedication to those who've served, facts about history, how the host related to you, their history, your ability to really see and touch anything you wanted along with a general sense of matching your energy with a hint of mischief. Please do a favor to them and enjoy yourself as openly as possible. Ha. Don't get me wrong, it's a distillery that's somewhat small, no food, and it looks.. like a distillery. No mixed drinks or fancy set up. It is exactly this. Took about an hour, but there were two distinct whiskey's that is never tasted anything quite like. They're reasonable for what they are and affordable considering they're winning awards at least for the butterscotch in top of it's class. The batch of regular whiskey is what got me. No two batches are alike, but thus one was money, smooth and didn't have the same body. It was described as a mortar that goes up and then has a pop, but it was more like watching that fantastic show than lighting the fireworks yourself. Smooth every step with all the same sensations and not a touch of burn. I'll go back and buy more ASAP.
Did a tour and was pleasantly surprised at the knowledge of the guide. Worth the price of admission to learn about their process and see the distillery. For being newer, they have a great product. The raisin was shockingly smooth. We bought a bottle and will buy more. Definitely a neat thing to experience for a few hours on a rainy weekend.
This is the best distillery tour. And then to top it off, the whiskey, bourbon, and unique spirit combo creations are great too. Come for the experience, stay for the whiskey.
Fun experience! Andy is super knowledgeable and a great guide. The Bourbons and Whiskey are fantastic! Who knew those fools from Kentucky where all cowards, traitors, liars and deserters!
We had a great time! Andy blends history, military history, chemistry, and charisma in his tours. Hearing about his old Pennsylvania family whiskey/bourbon recipe and how it comes to life in the small distillery setting is fascinating and fun. And I can’t forget - the whiskey and bourbons are the highest quality and taste great. Butterscotch was our favorite!
We had the pleasure of meeting Andy and we had the best time ever. Due to conflicting travel times to get back to the distillery to pick up our items , he went out of his way to make sure we didn’t leave back to AZ without by far in my book the best whiskey on this side of the Rockies. We are very thankful and hands down the highlight of being in Tacoma. I highly recommend the tasting tour. Memorable experience. Thank you Andy
What a great spot!! We enjoyed our tour and tasting. The owner was amazingly charismatic and taught us so much about distilling. We loved our tasting. We had great tastes for both those who enjoy spirits and those of us who were less knowledgeable about whiskey. We thought everything we tasted was amazing. We will be back again!! We will definitely be buying more.
Take the tour and whiskey tasting . Andy and Joe did a great job and were great to talk to. Very entertaining and great Whiskey.
