About

Orthopedic Sugery, Sports Medicine

Orthopedics
The Greek word ‘ortho’ means straight and ‘pedics’ comes from the Greek ‘pais’ meaning children. For many centuries, orthopedists have been involved in the treatment of crippled children.

Description

I was born and raised in a family surrounded by competitive team sports. This helped shape my focus in life and develop my skills as a physician.

I had a stellar soccer and basketball career at North Kingstown High School and went on to play collegiate soccer at Dartmouth College. While at Dartmouth I found my passion for medicine and orthopedics. After college, I played professional soccer in Seattle, WA. While playing I realized my real focus was on medical school.

I moved back east and attended Brown/Dartmouth Program in Medicine graduating from Brown with both my medical degree and a Master’s in Biomaterials. I went on to complete my Orthopedic Surgery Residency, Orthopedic Trauma Fellowship, and Sports Medicine Fellowship at Rhode Island Hospital and the Brown Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

I then spent four years on active duty in the U.S. Navy as the Head of Orthopedics for the Navy in Newport, RI, where I was also Head Team Physician for the Naval Academy Prep School and Team Physician for the United States Coast Guard Academy.

In 2009, I was deployed to Afghanistan and spent eight months caring for wounded warriors and Afghan civilians. I returned home to Rhode Island and joined South County Orthopedics in 2010.

I chose South County Orthopedics because of the doctors—we respect one another and complement each other professionally. That makes for a better experience for our patients. And my family and I love living here in South County.

When people ask me why I chose orthopedic surgery I tell them it’s because it’s a fairly black and white specialty. People come to you with a problem and you help them get back to whatever they consider to be normal activities.

These days, patients want quick fixes and instant results. My philosophy is to be a good listener. After listening to people, I can give them their options. I don’t push patients in any one direction. I believe in collaborating with patients on their treatment.

It’s interesting how things seem to come full circle. My mother, father, and brother all went to URI. My father was the URI Soccer Coach for nearly 20 years. And now years later I’m caring for URI athletes as one of their official athletic department physicians.

When I’m not helping patients and URI athletes I love spending time with my family. My accomplished wife has her own career, as well as organizing the household for our four children. My older sons and younger daughters all participate in activities and sports at all levels.

As busy as I am I continue to stay active in sports. I occasionally can be found on the soccer field, either playing or coaching; but, more often than not, I’ll be cycling or paddle boarding with my wife, Jessica.
