Owen's Playground

About

A place where ALL kids shine!
Rotary Park (Weaver Road and High School Road)
Bainbridge Island, Washington

Description

Owen's Playground opened on July 16th, 2016! We invite you to come and play! Friends of Owen's Playground is a community organization whose mission is to spread the word about the importance of inclusive play and to provide a vibrant, social network for this valuable space here on Bainbridge Island.

Our project aims for a much higher standard of accessibly than those outlined in the updated ADA guidelines from March 2012. At the heart of this project is quality, engaging play that addresses the changing population of children and adults who utilize wheeled mobility devices, who have sensory processing issues, who have visual and hearing impairments, and who live with the challenges associated with autism, Asperger’s and other disorders. The project will also thoughtfully respond to the needs of parents and caregivers, providing a space that is inviting, stimulating, creative and that cultivates a sense of community.

Our project aims to serve ALL ages and ALL abilities throughout Bainbridge Island, the Kitsap Peninsula and areas of Seattle who will be attracted to and served by the inclusive nature of the playground and its proximity to the Winslow core.

Mission

To design and build a quality outdoor, inclusive play space that engages and stimulates play for ALL ages and ALL abilities and that offers gathering spaces that encourage and enhance community.

One of the best playgrounds I've been to. Great for kids of all ages and actually won an award for accessible design. Wheelchair friendly, baby friendly toddler friendly. There's even a dinosaur kids can excavate from sand box!
First time on the island, and we truly enjoyed ourselves at the park! There was a little bit of everything for children to enjoy. The locals were so nice and inviting, we even made some friends. Can't wait to go back this summer!
This park has been maintained really well. The playground is super clean and neat, kids will have very good time. There is a sandpit where kids pour water from the rotatory hand pump and play in it. Ideal time to stop by is after 5 pm during simmers as it gets hot There is a restroom present right in between the baseball court and playground.
Amazing playground for children of all abilities. It's very nice to see that these places do exist, but there are too few of them. Excellent blend of walking areas integrated within the outer areas of the playground. Very highly recommended.
Owens Playground in Bainbridge Island, WA, is a remarkable playground designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind. It is widely considered one of the most innovative playgrounds in the region and is a popular destination for families with children of all ages. The playground's construction is characterized by the use of diverse materials such as concrete, wood, and steel. The steel structure of the play area is painted in vivid colors and consists of interconnected platforms, slides, and climbing elements that provide a safe and stimulating environment for children to play. The playground's wooden structures, including a playhouse, sandpit, and benches, are constructed using rot-resistant wood to ensure their longevity and safety. Additionally, the playground features several rubberized pathways and play surfaces made from recycled tires that provide a soft and safe environment for children to play. Owens Playground is designed to engage children's senses, featuring a sensory garden, a musical play area, and a water feature. The sensory garden contains an array of plants and flowers that stimulate the senses, while the musical play area lets children experiment with different sounds and rhythms. The water feature is an interactive space with fountains and sprays that encourages imaginative play.
Owen's Park was beautiful. It had clean working bathrooms, a very unique spinning wheel water/sand play structure, swings, and natural hideaways for kids. I only wish there was a little more shade and a working drinking fountain by the bathrooms.
Amazing playground. They have nice swings too.
Great spot for a little sand and water fun. Wear play clothes. There's a unique rock water fountain where the kids can play in sand and make rivers. And also dig for fossils.
Fantastic park. Several different types of swings. A small water area. A sand pit where dinosaur bones can be uncovered. A slide that isn't too steep. Plenty of activities. Restrooms available.
Excellent, well maintained playground for kids of all ages. Lots of unique kinds of equipment plus a water feature and sand so bring a towel/change of clothes. Normally there are restroom facilities but they appear to have been closed for COVID, so two portable toilets are provided onsite. Parking is ample but there is an overflow lot down the hill near the lower baseball field.
