I work right by this place, and also I'm in the market for a new Santa Cruz bike, so I thought this ought to be my new go-to shop. Unfortunately on several separate occasions when bringing my city bike in for minor repairs I've had bad experiences. In all these cases the employees were attempting to be helpful, but due to policies set by the owner they could not be. The first case they could not lend me a 15mm wrench to change my tube. Of course I carry a small wrench with me, but the full-size one just makes it a lot easier to tighten properly. In another case I was inflating my tire with their floor pump and the owner rudely told me to take it outside, even though I'm out of the way and the place is empty with plenty of room. Finally, the last straw was when I wanted to get a tune up and they said they don't take reservations, I'd have to leave my bike for a week. They claimed this is because people don't show up for drop-off. Well, frankly, that is just an indication you don't want customers who actually, you know, ride their bikes! I've worked in a shop before, and I know from experience that a big enough percentage of customers will always leave their bike, so you can always fill any missing slots with bikes that are on hand. No customer has ever complained because you call to tell them their bike is finished early. Anyway, I understand that there can be problems with tool theft and having a policy for customers to do their own repairs outside is reasonable. My problem is really with the whole vibe that they don't really want my business. Maybe it's because I'm not decked out in spandex, and the bike I brought in is just a steel frame single-speed Surly mtb they don't think I'm a valuable customer. However looks can be deceiving, I ride a cheap bike in the city so I can lock it outside, but I've also been a serious mountain biker for 20+ years, and thinking about buying a new Bronson or 5010 CC. I'm guessing if I did that, some of the policies might magically become a bit softer, but there's no way I'll take the risk of not being able to schedule a service because these guys want to run their shop like some kind of hipster foodie joint.
Can't recommend Pacific enough. They must've spent well over an hour helping us to pick out the perfect bikes. Super knowledgeable and friendly, there was never any pressure or up-sell. In the end we got 2 low-mid range bikes, but were treated with the same care as if we were spending $000s. They aldi provide 1 year of free adjustments to your bike, plus 15% off accessories for the next 3 months.
The Pacific Bike guys are great. I recently started taking the Ferry in from Alameda and riding my bike to my office. Fortunately for me, I'm right around the corner from Pacific Bicycle. My bike hasn't been ridden in a while and I needed a few accessories for it. I went down to the shop and the guys there were very helpful and knowledgeable about the items I needed for my bike. Secondly I had to have my pedals replaced because I couldn't break the bolts off and the guys gladly took my bike in and replaced them in about 2 minutes, hassle free. I highly recommend the Pacific Bicycle shop in San Francisco. They also have a great line of accessories and bicycles to choose from.
I've bought a bike from them and used them for service for 3 years now. It's an unusual shop in that it is staffed by super knowledgeable and dedicated bike guys who can talk you through any bike to the smallest details. And at the same time they rent good bikes in great shape I've done this once. for tourists. Sometimes they are busy and slow, but they are always friendly and helpful!
Good store if you know a lot about bikes and don't expect information. They have lots of awesome bikes in inventory, including the killer price I just got on a Scott road bike. They carry lots of great brands that most other shops don't carry. The guy who helped me out was condescending in that classic hipster sense. Sorry, but if I'm dropping a boatload of money I expect answers to my technical questions or be honest and say "I don't know". Also, after purchasing the bike I noticed the brake post wasn't tightened properly, so the brake rubbed; and the low-limiter screw on the front derailleur wasn't properly adjusted, so it didn't shift properly. Still, worth the trouble for the sick new bike.
Bought my bike here about 5 years ago and then hadn't really been back. Dropped in recently to have my bike serviced and was impressed with the customer service and willingness to have a chat about what I wanted. Stuck around for another 20 minutes just to discuss bikes. Very happy with my return so far and will see how the bike service goes when I get my bike back next week . I think they quoted $85 for a standard service.
Bought my Cervelo road bike from here and could not have been happier with my experience. The staff is super knowledgable and patient. They don't want to put you on just any bike, but they want to make sure you find something that is a good fit. They let you demo the bike and fit the bike to you. They have a great selection of road bikes - not sure about mountain as I'm not a mountain biker. My husband and I have purchased 3 bikes from here and would come back again.
During a recent trip to San Francisco my wife and I rented bikes from Pacific Bicycle. Our experience was very positive, Brook helped us out and we were on our way quickly. The two main benefits to renting with Pacific; the bikes do not have stickers and bags with the rental shop logo, so you don't look quite so 'touristy' and the cost is lower than pretty much all other shops I found online. They also only charge $5.00 if you keep the bike overnight and use it the next day... Pretty sweet deal. Two day rental from Pacific is roughly the same as 1 day rental with a competitor. The only down side, their rentals do not come with a bell or lights. In my opinion a bell is the most important piece of safety equipment on a bike, aside from functioning breaks ; - Especially in an unfamiliar city. It is that reason that they didn't get a 5 star rating from me. Thanks again to Pacific Bike - A real bike shop that helps out travellers with quality bike rental service.
I took my racing bike in to have a spoke fixed and the wheel trued. The guy I spoke to was brilliant and discussed the different options. They managed to have me back on the road later the same day and for a very reasonable price. I will definitely be returning to have my bike serviced here again!
Huge shop, tons of bikes, tons of brands... Couldn't understand why a bike shop would tell me that I have a bike that they 'Don't work on'. What? That makes absolutely no sense. The 1st thing that I was told about my bike was that the front steer was 'on backwards'. What? Thanks for the expertise, I never would have guessed that... 'We don't work on these brand of bikes.' You're a bike shop that doesn't work on Schwinn bikes? The guy was really nice about it though, but for some reason was eager to get me out of the shop. Will gladly take my business elsewhere, but he certainly didn't seem bothered that I would. Customer service, go figure...
