One of the many progressive techniques that most of PGLC’s therapists are trained in is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is a form of psychotherapy used to resolve symptoms resulting from traumatic experiences.
This approach was formed by Dr. Francine Shapiro, a psychologist in Palo Alto in 1987. It was created to resolve trauma related disorders resulting from distressing events, such as rape or military combat.
EMDR is a combination of several bilateral stimulations of the brain. It combines eye movements, bilateral sounds, visualized images and body sensation to stimulate optical nerves.
EMDR reduces the symptoms and disorders created by trauma. It creates new connections in the brain between distressing events and new, more positive information. EMDR entails reprocessing the disturbing memories by feeling them more fully in a safe environment. As a result symptoms are reduced and traumatic memories are desensitized.
Based on the evidence of the American Psychiatric Association and The Department of Veterans Affairs and Defense, EMDR is the most effective support in the treatment of trauma. EMDR has been shown to be effective on different types of mental health diagnoses issues including Depression, Anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
