Encouragement, motivation, exercise tips and strategies, and nutritional support for all who wish to accomplish fitness goals
My name is Garrett Medford and I am a personal trainer for the Anytime Fitness in Keller. I have been in the fitness community for the majority of my life, whether I was training for sports in high school or training for 5k’s and Tough Mudders.
Before I began to love this wonderful world of fitness, I was an overweight middle school kid that struggled with eating and exercising regularly. I wasn’t conscious of the decisions I was making when it came to nutrition and exercise. This all changed when I was tired of being the “Fat Kid”. I wanted to prove not only to myself but to my family, friends, coaches and my doctor that I would not continue to live in the bottom percentile of weight in kids my age. I began this extraordinary journey to become one of the fittest members of the football team. I was properly dieting and exercising more outside of practice to get into better playing shape. The extra work always pays off; this is the key ingredient to becoming successful. You cannot continue down the same path and expect different results. When I finally reached my goal, I started encouraging the entire team to participate in these extra workouts. This was the moment when I fell in love with training. I was able to see the progress that the other players were going through.
Being able to change their abilities and their lives motivated me even more to learn about the body and how to properly train an individual starting at any level. I went to college to become a personal trainer. These classes along with college football taught me how to lead, motivate, teach proper technique, and how to build the rapport with my teammates. During my second year of football, I broke my back and was hardly able to get around campus. However, the larger struggle was not being able to exercise. As time went by, I fell into worse physical shape and started to gain all the weight, which I had worked so hard to shed, back. With being so young, my doctor told me that it would eventually heal by itself. I was once again struggling with my weight. Merely six months previous I was in the best shape of my life. I slipped back into my old ways when not being able to exercise and it eventually lead me to be in the worse shape of my life. After the six months of not being able to work out and no healing progression in my back, I was finally granted the opportunity to have surgery. After a two-hour procedure, I was relieved to wake up and not feel any more pain. It was at this point that I told my family I was determined to get back to the shape I was just six months prior.
I started off slow, making sure not to aggravate my back; but, after a full release from the doctor, I was training harder than ever before. Running before class, weights during lunch, and speed drills after work. I was on a mission to not only make the team again but achieve a whole new level of fitness. After months and months of proper training and nutrition I felt I was finally ready to conquer the tryout. During the following tryout for the team I performed better than I had ever performed in the past. I reached my goal and made the team once again. It revealed to me that we as individuals can do anything if we just put our minds to it and put in the work. EVERYTHING WE NEED IS ALREADY INSIDE OF US!
As I finished my college career, I started training several individuals for all types of events and goals. Whether it was to improve overall fitness, compete in their first 5K, or to improve their abilities for their given sport; I was encouraging and giving them the tools to be the best that they can be.
Today, I’m a dedicated fitness professional and it’s my mission in life to educate and motivate ordinary people like you and me to achieve extraordinary health and fitness results…
