Phoenix Civic Space Park

Description

Civic Space Park is an urban park in Downtown Phoenix, Arizona which first opened to the public in April 2009. It is located directly across Central Avenue from the main part of the ASU Downtown Campus. It is also located north of the Central Station METRO Light Rail and bus transfer stations.HistoryThe land the park is located on was a combination of old buildings and parking lots before the City of Phoenix began buying the properties. The main building renovated in the project is called the A.E. England Building. Originally opened in the 1920s as a car dealership, it now houses retail space and a community meeting room for special events. In the outdoor spaces, the majority of the park (over 70%) will be shaded, once all the trees have fully matured, through a combination of trees and shade structures. Solar panels covering the tops of the shade canopies produce a combined 75 kilowatts of power. The centerpiece of the park is the US$2.4 million sculpture by Janet Echelman called Her Secret Is Patience. It consists of multicolored fiber nets suspended up to 145ft in the air. At night ground-mounted colored lighting changes throughout the season and gives a different appearance to the daytime look. It was questionable whether or not the piece would be built as the leaders at the City of Phoenix changed their minds several times whether or not to build the art piece. In 2011 the park won the Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence silver medal.

Clean and shining park Beautiful Green grace Located in downtown Phoenix The one problem is car parking there's no car parking area
I really love that there's an outdoor space in this location. A lot of really neat features, including art installations, historic buildings that have been repurposed, and a variety of landscaping. The sad part is- it seems neglected and like they've given up on certain parts of it. Example- there's a water feature/splash pad that looks like it hasn't operated in years, but it's still there. I'd love to see this park in its prime again
Hard to rate. Depends on what your looking for. Good place for ASU downtown students to stretch their legs. Artistic design. No free parking nearby. Frequented by homeless individuals.
The view of "Her Secret Is Patience " art is just majestic. It even gets better at night with all the lights, just make you awe! Must visit!
First time here. Not too crowed. Nice view of the buildings
Beautiful park with incredible art by Janet Echelman. So wonderful to have a piece of art by a world renowned artist right here in our own backyard. Unfortunately, there was a lot of poverty, homelessness and litter in and around the park. Ironic , since the park is supposed to be an urban lab of sustainability. Also m, dismal to see homeless individuals sleeping under the weight of a $2.5M piece of art. I hope these folks get back on their feet and I hope the city steps up their game in this area.
Nice park with some grass and some places to sit. The best part of the park is the huge art installation "Her Secret Is Patience." Playground: I didn't see a playground. Restrooms: I didn't see any. Dog-friendliness: Dogs are allowed in park, but we had to stay off the grass because it had just been reseeded. I didn't see any doggie waste bag dispensers. Picnic area: We weren't allowed on the grass because it was being reseeded. I suppose folks could picnic on the concrete.
Great place to hang out in the middle of downtown Phoenix.
The public art piece was cool, but I wouldn't recommend going alone at night owing to the scores of homeless people who hang out there. Perhaps it feels safer on weekends or game nights.
PBS kids had a awesome event in civic space park. We had a blast. We look forward to next year.
