This burial ground was original started by the Metropolitan Police Burial Association. This was an organization of the Metropolitan Police Department which was the name of the NYC Police Department before it was called the NYPD.
There are six Officers who died in the Line of duty buried in the Police Arlington plots.They are:
Ptl. Charles F Smith 96 Pct
Ptl. John Conk 93 Pct
Ptl. James Baker 83 Pct
Ptl. Frederick Thomas 9 Pct
Ptl. Charles L. Godfrey 16 Pct
Ptl. Charles Thompson Metropolitan Police Department 4 Pct
And two officers who were killed while serving in the US Military over seas.
Ptl. Henry Haywood who was killed in action at the Battle of San Juan Hill while serving with Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders during the Spanish American War.
Ptl. John Endress who was killed in action in France during WWI.
The NYPD Traffic Squad is the fraternal organization of the NYPD that has taken the lead and organizes the annual memorial service held at Cypress Hills Cemetery each year in May. This annual event coincides with National Police Week.
