The Federation represents Minneapolis police officers in matters related to their working conditions, and terms and conditions of employment. The Federation is a union but its members, deemed “essential employees,” are prohibited by law from striking.

The Federation serves its members not only in the traditional role of negotiating and enforcing the collective bargaining agreement; but also in matters such as critical incidents, investigations of officers conducted under the Police Officer’s Bill of Rights, and lobbying to advance the public policy interests of members at the local, state and federal levels. The Federation takes a very active role in putting a public face on Minneapolis police officers. It works with media and community leaders to present a positive image of police officers to the public. The Federation also actively works with other unions that represent Minneapolis employees on issues of general importance to all city employees.

The Federation Board of Directors consists of 10 elected members (nine from the Minneapolis Police Department and one from the Park Police Department), each serving a two-year term. The Federation president serves full-time, along with one other designated board member. The rest of the board serves part-time, while remaining full-time members of the police force.
